BRRRR ... mercury plunges to bone-chilling record -6.8C

Wanganui Chronicle (New Zealand)
"Georgina Griffiths from NIWA said these temperatures were taken about 120cm off the ground,so the ground temperatures would have been much colder."Wanganui had -2.9 degrees, so you're looking at about a six-degree frost." The Waimarino region has also been very cold, with -4.2C recorded in Ohakune on Saturday. .....Ms Griffiths said the central North Island chill was nothing compared to that in Central Otago, where clear, cold nights have meant frost 20 days in a row.So cold has it been down south that the famous curling festival, the bonspiel, has been held recently - only the third time in 14 years that the ice on the Idaburn Dam has been thick enough to hold it."
