Climategate

"Carbon (Dioxide) trading is now the fastest growing commodities market on earth.....And here’s the great thing about it. Unlike traditional commodities markets, which will eventually involve delivery to someone in physical form, the carbon (dioxide) market is based on lack of delivery of an invisible substance to no-one. Since the market revolves around creating carbon (dioxide) credits, or finding carbon (dioxide) reduction projects whose benefits can then be sold to those with a surplus of emissions, it is entirely intangible." (Telegraph)

This blog has been tracking the 'Global Warming Scam' for over ten years now. There are a very large number of articles being published in blogs and more in the MSM who are waking up to the fact the public refuse to be conned any more and are objecting to the 'green madness' of governments and the artificially high price of energy. This blog will now be concentrating on the major stories as we move to the pragmatic view of 'not if, but when' and how the situation is managed back to reality. To quote Professor Lindzen, "a lot of people are going to look pretty silly"

Misinterpreting Natural Climate Change as Manmade

Roy W. Spencer, Ph. D.
"Here I will use it to demonstrate that the global warming so commonly blamed on humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions can just as easily be explained as largely natural in origin, most likely due to a natural decrease in global cloud cover. "

Maybe Some Inconvenient Similarities

KLIMAZWIEBEL
"..I should make one point clear here. I am not a raving skeptic. I am not at all in favour of raping and plundering the planet on which we live for the sake of short term gains. But I am in favour of informed rational thought and rational action. I guess I have a rather moderate view concerning climate change. But if once in a while the parties involved would step out of the box and put the climate change issue (and all that surrounds it) into the perspective of a political philosophy (as opposed to a plitico-scientific issue) they might see things a little differently. The woolly world of Chris Huhne

Christopher Booker, Telegraph
No one can explain how we cut emissions by four fifths without closing down virtually all of our economy...."Two events last week led me to muse on the links between the man who is now our Energy and Climate Change Secretary, Chris Huhne, and the extinction of the woolly mammoth. A team of scientists suggest in Nature Geoscience that the sudden extinction of the mammoths some 12,000 years ago, as the world emerged from the last ice age, may have had a dramatic effect on the Earth’s climate. They argue that the emission by these giant herbivores of nine million tons a year of methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more powerful than CO2, was so significant that their disappearance led to a sharp drop in global temperatures, and the world temporarily froze over again in the re-glaciation known as the Younger Dryas.

This is a theory so batty one scarcely knows whether to laugh or cry. If that comparatively tiny amount of methane was so powerful, how did the world manage to remain so cold during the million years of ice ages when eructating megafauna were abundant? Clearly those scientists were so carried away by the obsession with climate change that they hadn’t the slightest idea what they were talking about. But even more is this true, it seems, of the man now in charge of Britain’s energy policy. "

Rebel scientists force Royal Society to accept climate change scepticism

The Times
" The Royal Society has appointed a panel to rewrite the 350-year-old institution’s official position on global warming. It will publish a new “guide to the science of climate change” this summer. The society has been accused by 43 of its Fellows of refusing to accept dissenting views on climate change and exaggerating the degree of certainty that man-made emissions are the main cause. The society appears to have conceded that it needs to correct previous statements. It said: “Any public perception that science is somehow fully settled is wholly incorrect — there is always room for new observations, theories, measurements.” This contradicts a comment by the society’s previous president, Lord May, who was once quoted as saying: “The debate on climate change is over.”The admission that the society needs to conduct the review is a blow to attempts by the UN to reach a global deal on cutting emissions. The Royal Society is viewed as one of the leading authorities on the topic and it nominated the panel that investigated and endorsed the climate science of the University of East Anglia. Sir Alan Rudge, a society Fellow and former member of the Government’s Scientific Advisory Committee, is one of the leaders of the rebellion who gathered signatures on a petition sent to Lord Rees, the society president. He told The Times that the society had adopted an “unnecessarily alarmist position” on climate change.Sir Alan, 72, an electrical engineer, is a member of the advisory council of the climate sceptic think-tank, the Global Warming Policy Foundation. He said: “I think the Royal Society should be more neutral and welcome credible contributions from both sceptics and alarmists alike. There is a lot of science to be done before we can be certain about climate change and before we impose upon ourselves the huge economic burden of cutting emissions.

It says: "This is not intended to provide exhaustive answers to every contentious argument that has been put forward by those who seek to distort and undermine the science of climate change ..."

One Fellow reportedly said: "This appears to suggest that anyone who questions climate science is malicious. But in science everything is there to be questioned – that should be the very essence of the Royal Society. Some of us were very upset about that."

Why I keep banging on and on about Global bloody Warming

Telegraph
"..So let me explain, briefly, why I rarely can – with reference to the ludicrous story which was given the front page of today’s Times (formerly a newspaper of some note). The story, enthusiastically headlined EU SETS TOUGHEST TARGETS TO FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING goes like this: .....In Britain, David Cameron is wedded to the same suicidal policy – on the one hand brandishing £6.5 billion cuts in government spending as though this were a sign of his maturity and his commitment to reducing Britain’s deficit, while on the other remaining committed to a “low carbon” economy set to destroy what’s left of our industry and cost the taxpayer at least £18 billion (yep – almost THREE times as much as the pathetic cuts announced so far by his pathetic chancellor) a year.Around the world, in the greatest financial crisis we have faced since the 1930s, our leaders are behaving like imbeciles. And nowhere is this imbecility more painfully manifest than in their approach to the non-existent problem they now call Climate Change. That’s why I keep banging on about Climate Change. It is, unfortunately, the Key to all Mythologies."

Climategate and the Scientific Elite

National Review
"..Unfortunately, in other areas, some scientists have been getting away with blatant disregard for the scientific method. The most prominent example, “Climategate,” highlights how dangerous the politicization of science can be. The public reaction to Climategate should motivate politicians to curb such abuses in the future. Yet it was politicians who facilitated this politicization of science in the first place. ..... It starkly revealed to the public how many global-warming scientists speak and act like politicians. To those scientists, the message trumped the science. Few members of the public have accepted the findings of the inquiries exonerating the scientists; most dismiss them as whitewashes. This is to the good, for it reinforces awareness of the scientific elite President Eisenhower warned about."

Climate Fears Turn to Doubts Among Britons

NYT
"...Nowhere has this shift in public opinion been more striking than in Britain, where climate change was until this year such a popular priority that in 2008 Parliament enshrined targets for emissions cuts as national law. But since then, the country has evolved into a home base for a thriving group of climate skeptics who have dominated news reports in recent months, apparently convincing many that the threat of warming is vastly exaggerated. A survey in February by the BBC found that only 26 percent of Britons believed that “climate change is happening and is now established as largely manmade,” down from 41 percent in November 2009. A poll conducted for the German magazine Der Spiegel found that 42 percent of Germans feared global warming, down from 62 percent four years earlier."

Springwatch finds the BBC in cloud cuckoo land

Christopher Booker,Telegraph
"Last Monday, in its obsession with global warming, the BBC got comically caught out. It devoted a whole hour-long edition of its popular nature programme Springwatch to one of the more familiar themes of warmist propaganda, the way in which springs have been noticeably moving forwards in recent decades, with flowers, tree leaves and much else appearing weeks earlier than they used to do.

A familiar instance to any observer of the countryside has been the dramatic advance in flowering times of those three hedgerow indicators, blackthorn, hawthorn and elder. These used to blossom with unfailing regularity in the closing days of April, May and June, and their recent flowering weeks earlier has undoubtedly been a reflection of a warming climate. But contradicting any belief that this change in our climate is "irreversible" has been the fact that this year, after the hardest of three cold winters running, nature's calendar has dramatically reverted to "normal". The blackthorn burst into flower with unusual intensity in late April, may blossom is only now appearing, as it used to do, in the last 10 days of May. ...."

Chris Huhne will ensure the coalition is soon out of power

Telegraph, Christopher Booker
"The new energy secretary has no practical solutions for our looming energy crisis....The most obvious Achilles heel of this weird new Government is the issue on which the two parties making it up are most firmly united. On Friday morning, a beaming David Cameron stood alongside his new Energy and Climate Change Secretary, the Lib Dem Chris Huhne, to proclaim their dedication to halting what Mr Huhne called "the greatest challenge facing mankind": global warming. Both parties are pledged to cut Britain's CO2 emissions by more than four fifths in the next 40 years. Both are committed to building thousands more wind turbines. And neither ever mentions the crisis fast bearing down on us when we lose 14 of the nuclear and coal-fired power stations which supply 40 per cent of the electricity that currently keeps all our economy running, .....What is truly terrifying about putting Mr Huhne in charge of Britain's energy policy is that, like the rest of his Government colleagues, he clearly hasn't the slightest practical understanding of what is involved. Obviously, he has no idea of just how useless windmills are in providing any more than a derisory fraction of the electricity we need to keep our lights on and our computers running. The 3,000 already built provide on average no more electricity than a single medium-sized conventional power station, and the more we build, the more we will have to build CO2-emitting power stations, costing billions of pounds, simply to provide back-up for when the wind is not blowing. The lamentable fact that David Cameron has appointed Chris Huhne , Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh, Hampshire, as the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, underscores one’s profoundest fears that our leading politicians have still still not grasped, despite all the red flag warnings, the depth and urgency of the UK energy crisis. David Davis: Why this ferocious desire to impose hair-shirt policies?(Dec 2009)
"..The row about whether global warming exists gets even more virulent. The case is not helped by the fact that the planet appears to have been cooling, not warming, in the last decade. Last week, the row was fuelled after a hacker revealed emails between the world's leading climate scientists that seemed to show them conspiring to rig the figures to support their theories. So it is unsurprising that more than half the public no longer believe in global warming.Today, the economic climate makes people question whether we can afford the expense of these policies. The UK's environmental policy has a long-term price tag of about £55bn, before taking into account the impact on economic growth.

The fixation of the green movement with setting ever tougher targets is a policy destined to collapse. I appreciate that government bureaucrats believe that there is no world outside Washington, yet nature has given us the opportunity to grade both the predictive and observational skills of the experts. And it looks like they deserve a rather poor grade. According to data collected by Rutgers University Global Snow Lab, this past October through March period was the snowiest on record in the Northern Hemisphere – with an average monthly snow cover of 39,720,106 km2. Peer-Reviewed Research: Unprecedented Global Warming During Medieval Period, Boreholes Reveal

C3
"Way back in 1997, researchers published a paper that was based on data from 6,000 plus borehole sites from all the continents. The reconstructed temperatures clearly showed a Medieval Period warming that was, and is, unprecedented. The data also makes clear that subsequent warming began well before the growth of human CO2 emissions and this natural rebound would obviously lead to temperatures similar to the Medieval Period.

A year later, the infamous Mann hockey-stick temperature chart was published to wild acclaim by the IPCC and AGW-centric activists. So popular did the Mann chart become, the 6,000+ borehole chart was completely ignored since its data refuted the Mann study. The borehole scientists then decided to re-publish their study with primarily only the blue-side (the typical AGW-favored data cherry-picking) of the chart below. This repackaged borehole study became accepted by the AGW-centric scientists as it seemed to support their cause and the Mann's hockey-stick."

New SPPI paper on Ocean Acidification

The Hockey Schtick
"Since the CO2 causes catastrophic global warming schtick hasn't worked out, many alarmists have now turned their focus onto another imaginary problem: CO2 causing "acidification" of the oceans. A new SPPI paper by Lord Monckton exposes the fallacy.Key points:

* Doubling of atmospheric levels would only increase dissolved CO2 in the oceans by .48%
* There is no reliable evidence that ocean pH is falling
* Increased CO2 dissolution in the oceans increases calcification of shellfish and coral
* Corals evolved at a time when CO2 levels were 15 times higher than the present
* Laboratory experiments on sealife in which hydrochloric acid is added to the water (not CO2) and without the natural buffers present in the ocean is meaningless to determine effects of increased CO2 levels on sealife.

I hate to tell you this but committing Britain to a low-carbon economy is not like committing yourself to keeping all phone boxes painted red or promising Britain will never join a currency it was never going to join in a million years anyway.A low carbon economy is virtually the same thing as NO economy."

With Elections Near, Australia's Rudd Backs Off Ambitious Carbon Trading Plan

Time
"In the last three years, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has often used his podium to talk to the nation about climate change. He has called it "the great moral and economic issue challenge of our time," comparing global warming skeptics to gamblers who "happily play with our children's future." .....In fact, Rudd's firm views on global warming helped push him to victory in the national 2007 elections....But that was then. Last week, in what Australian news website newmatilda.com quickly dubbed the "great moral back flip of our time," Rudd announced he was shelving ETS — at least until 2013. ....Cynics, however, have said that the move was a tactical one. A federal election is due to take place this year, and polls were showing that Australians had lost interest in climate change. Tony Abbott, leader of the opposition Liberal Party, tagged the ETS as a "great big new tax on everything" and the label stuck.

Testimony of The Viscount Monckton of Brenchley Before Congress May 6, 2010

Icecap
"The Select Committee, in its letter inviting testimony for the present hearing, cites various scientific bodies as having concluded that
1. The global climate has warmed;
2. Human activities account for most of the warming since the mid-20th century;
3. Climate change is already causing a broad range of impacts in the United States;
4. The impacts of climate change are expected to grow in the coming decades.

The first statement requires heavy qualification and, since the second is wrong, the third and fourth are without foundation and must fall. The Select Committee has requested answers to the following questions: ...."

Blowout: the real reason Rudd ditched his ETS

Andrew Bolt, Herald Sun (Australia)
"LEST anyone doubt the Rudd government’s commitment to its budget rules, it trashed its emissions trading system so that it could honour its commitment to keep spending growth below 2 per cent.Postponing the ETS does virtually nothing to improve national savings since the cash raised from auctioning permits to emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere almost exactly matches the cash paid out in compensation. ....The ETS was the biggest single contributor to that growth. The budget update showed that outlays on compensation for climate change rose from $430m in the upcoming budget year to $4.7bn in 2011-12 and $11.8bn in the following year."

Welcome to ManBearPighaven: the lovely new home that your carbon taxes bought

Telegraph
"Former Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, have added a Montecito-area property to their real estate holdings, reports the Montecito Journal. The couple spent $8,875,000 on an ocean-view villa on 1.5 acres with a swimming pool, spa and fountains, a real estate source familiar with the deal confirms. The Italian-style house has six fireplaces, five bedrooms and nine bathrooms. ....Enjoy! Remember, you helped Gore on the way to becoming a billionaire through the carbon trading system in which he owns a major shareholding. So I’m sure he and Tipper wouldn’t mind if you popped for a weekend stay or two whenever you’re in the Montecito area."

Whoops! CO2 has almost nothing to do with global warming, discovers top US meteorologist

Telegraph
" How we can possibly stop the environmental and energy policy of our next government being based on what US meteorologist Dr Roy Spencer calls “the worst case of mass hysteria the world has known.”?

Dr Spencer, formerly senior scientist for climate studies at NASA, now leads the US science team for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSRE) on NASA’s Aqua satellite. He co-developed the original satellite method for precise monitoring of global temperatures from Earth-orbiting satellites. He’s just the kind of egghead the IPCC claims to represent when it tells us the world is getting dangerously warmer, it’s man’s fault – the result of CO2 emissions – and it must be urgently addressed.

Except Dr Spencer doesn’t agree with any of that. He thinks it’s all nonsense, based on a very elementary error he describes in his new book The Great Global Warming Blunder. I summarise his arguments in this article."

(Desperately) Looking for Arctic warming

Climate Realists
"...Actually, the Arctic ice has been rebounding since its latest low ebb around September 2007. And despite steadily rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels - from 0.0285% or 285 ppm in 1870 to 0.0388% or 388 ppm today - average global temperatures have been stable or declining since 1995.

Even UK Climate Research Unit chief Phil Jones and other Climategate emailers acknowledge that now. “We can’t account for the lack of warming, and it’s a travesty that we can’t,” Kevin Trenberth moaned in one of the infamous Climategate emails.

Instead of sleds and snowshoes, the explorers should have rented Doc Brown’s “Back to the Future” time machine. They would have found plenty of the global warming and open waters they so desperately seek.

Vikings built homes, grew crops and raised cattle in Greenland in 950-1300, before they were frozen out by the Little Ice Age and encroaching pack ice and ice sheets.

Many warm periods followed, marked by open seas and minimal southward extent of Arctic sea ice, as noted in ships’ logs and discussed in scientific papers by Torgny Vinje and other experts. The warm periods of 1690-1710, 1750-1780 and 1918-1940, for instance, were often preceded and followed by colder temperatures, severe ice conditions and maximum southward ice packs, as during 1630-1660 and 1790-1830.

“Not only in the summer, but in the winter the ocean [in the Bering Sea region] was free of ice, sometimes with a wide strip of water up to at least 200 miles away from the shore,” Swedish explorer Oscar Nordkvist reported in 1822. "

“Catastrophic” retreat of glaciers in Spitsbergen

WUWT
"I’ve been given a report on glaciers and sea ice in the Arctic that I want to share with readers. There’s some compelling evidence of glacier melting and open water in the Arctic sea in this report that I haven’t seen before. .....All of these reports about sea ice and melt seems familiar, except the date, which is 1943. ...The more things change, the more they stay the same. It seems from history that the Arctic ice is always going up or down. We can’t assume that our recent 2007 record sea ice minimum is something unique in the history of the Arctic ice."

If Sea Level Was Rising, Wouldn’t Someone Have Noticed?

WUWT
"But I keep thinking that if sea level was rising significantly, some of the billions of people who live along the coasts might have noticed? My favorite snorkeling beach in California is The Cove in La Jolla. I first went there around 1960, when Raquel Welch (Tejada at the time) was named Homecoming Queen at La Jolla High School. I went snorkeling there again last summer. The beach is still there and hasn’t changed."

The Realists Take on Climate Change

Climate Realists
"In September last year, the World Meteorological Organisation hosted some 1,500 climate scientists at the much unheralded and poorly reported World Climate Conference 3 in Geneva, Switzerland. WCC3, an important precursor to “Copenhagen”, was called primarily to discuss, and advise on, the relative importance of shorter term climate cycles versus longer term trends. It succeeded in showing both the true depth of the divergence of views among the world’s top climate scientists, and how uncertain are predictions about global warming."
