Climategate

"Carbon (Dioxide) trading is now the fastest growing commodities market on earth.....And here’s the great thing about it. Unlike traditional commodities markets, which will eventually involve delivery to someone in physical form, the carbon (dioxide) market is based on lack of delivery of an invisible substance to no-one. Since the market revolves around creating carbon (dioxide) credits, or finding carbon (dioxide) reduction projects whose benefits can then be sold to those with a surplus of emissions, it is entirely intangible." (Telegraph)

This blog has been tracking the 'Global Warming Scam' for over ten years now. There are a very large number of articles being published in blogs and more in the MSM who are waking up to the fact the public refuse to be conned any more and are objecting to the 'green madness' of governments and the artificially high price of energy. This blog will now be concentrating on the major stories as we move to the pragmatic view of 'not if, but when' and how the situation is managed back to reality. To quote Professor Lindzen, "a lot of people are going to look pretty silly"

Ceci n'est pas un bonhomme de neige!

Telegraph
"Some of you may be looking out of your windows right now and think that the white stuff floating down from the sky is snow. It is not, of course. What the white stuff actually is the purely imaginary creation of your false consciousness. You see it because you want to see it; because in your evil, selfish, refusing-to-change-your-pampered-Western-lifestyle way you think it offers proof that man-made global warming doesn’t exist.

How can I be so sure? Well, even if you were to discount what the experts at the Met Office are telling us about this being the hottest year since at least the Holocene Optimum, the experts’ expert tells us so.

Who is the experts’ expert?

Why shame on you for not knowing!

His name is Dr David Viner, he used to work at Britain’s world-renowned Climatic Research Unit at the famed University of East Anglia, and in 2000 in the Independent he made the expert prediction that snow would soon become a “rare and exciting event”.

“Children just aren’t going to know what snow is,” he said.

'Hypocrisy' of Huhne at the eco summit with personal Jacuzzi in each £240-a-night suite

Daily Mail

"Campaigners reacted with disbelief at the decision to house the UK delegation at the resort. Matthew Sinclair from the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: ‘The waste and hypocrisy of the climate change travelling circus needs to end, particularly with so little expected out of the negotiations.’

You are paying for that dam green madness

Andrew Bolt, Herald Sun (Australia)
"Victoria’s former Labor Government costed a dam on the Mitchell River at $1.4 billion, but ruled it out as not green enough. It built instead a desalination plant for $5.7 billion that would produce a third of the water. In Queensland, too, a cheap dam was spurned in favor of a desalination plant that may now be mothballed, following a return of the rains that warmists said would disappear. ..."

'Mass suicide now the only option left' say Cancun scientists

Telegraph
"As the latest round of UN-sponsored climate talks opened in Cancun today, ’scientists’ had a stark message on the threat posed by Man Made Global Warming. It is now so severe that only by exterminating ourselves like the vile parasite we are can we hope to leave a planet fit for habitation by generations as yet unborn, ’scientists’ say."

And now the capital feels the bite: Overnight snowfall to engulf London as chaos continues for rest of UK

Daily Mail

" * Tube strike causes misery for Londoners
* 'Nightmare' on roads, say motoring groups
* Driver, 40, in critical condition after being hit in pile-up on M1
* Two die in Big Freeze over the weekend

The big freeze has brought mayhem to commuters today, after the coldest November night in a quarter of a century.Motoring groups have called conditions a ‘nightmare’, with roads blocked by snow and ice and cars struggling to start after sitting on driveways in sub-zero conditions all weekend. And a London Underground strike has crippled the network, causing lengthy delays in the freezing temperatures for millions of commuters."

'Howay man, it's not cold!' As Britain shivers, Newcastle girls prove they're not frightened of a bit of snow

Daily Mail
"Temperatures have plunged across the UK, with roads blocked, school closures and heavy snow blanketing huge swathes of the country. Not that you'd know it from these bracing pictures of female revellers in Newcastle city centre this weekend.A passenger jet had overshot a runway at the city's airport on Thursday but on Saturday night the girls pictured showed they didn't mind some fog on the Tyne, or snow in the Bigg Market."

The UK Met Office “Winter Forecast” – fail or faux?

WUWT
"Have a look at these two juxtaposed news clips from the UK Daily Mail, one from October 28th, 2010, the other from November 28th, 2010."

Mayhem Monday: Britain faces commuter chaos as temperatures hit -17C in the coldest November since 1985

Daily Mail
"Michael Dukes, of MeteoGroup, predicted readings of minus 20C in some parts of Scotland this week.‘You are seeing some ridiculously low temperatures – like the middle of Scandinavia,’ he said.‘This is certainly an extraordinary cold snap.’Many areas will see temperatures remain below zero tomorrow, while the warmest place will be the South East, which will experience a balmy 4C.The Arctic conditions have been caused by a combination of light winds, snow cover and clear skies - and could see readings down to minus 20C in Scotland later this week."

It's cold out there

Dr Richard North
"You don't have to say any more. The mercury at Llysdinam near Llandrindod Wells plunged to minus 17.3C – the principality’s lowest ever temperature for November and the UK's chilliest for the month since 1985. That temperature, incidentally, is just a fraction above the optimum for a domestic freezer.

Yet still they prattle about global warming ... or anything else that avoids getting to grips with the reality that we've been held hostage to a scare which is costing us billions. It won't go away, because it costs real money, takes lives and gives excessive power to those who should have none. The status quo is not an option."

Why I now deeply regret my last post

Telegraph
"But rather because in my eagerness publicly to expose the UEA’s unconscionable bullying – and also as a result of my puerile inability to resist taking the mick – I allowed myself to fall into an elephant-size trap: I fought a battle on the terrain of the enemy’s choosing. ....The whole point about Climategate – and, sheesh, it’s pretty weird that I still have to explain this having written perhaps half a million words on the subject since – is that the scientific detail is peripheral. And the reason it’s peripheral is because a corrupt, mendacious political, scientific, corporate and media establishment has rigged it that way: in Britain, everyone is in on the scam from the Royal Society to the Met office to the Hadley Centre to David Cameron’s Coalition; in the US the rot extends through most of the Obama administration to NASA to the Environmental Protection Agency to the Sierra Club to the Mainstream Media; in Australia, the guilty parties range from ABC – so red it makes the BBC sound like Fox news – to the supposedly conservative former Prime Minister John Howard; and that’s before you take into account the EU and the UN."

Despite hellish summer, Russia says “nyet” to AGW

WUWT
"“Climate is a concept that has existed as long as the Earth exists… several hundred million years ago the temperature was 10-13 degrees higher than now,” said Yury Israel, director of the Institute of Global Climate and Environment at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“What is happening now is not some kind of unusual special case,” he said, adding that life flourished on Earth at the time of dinosaurs."

'Stay indoors!' Police warn Britons to stay off the roads as temperatures fall to MINUS 10C and 15 inches of snow falls

Daily Mail

"Freezing weather will grip Britain for weeks to come, forecasters warned tonight - with rain, sleet and snow expected across the country. Some of the worst widespread early snow for 17 years has seen much of the country disrupted and police in affected areas are urging people to stay indoors.Severe weather warnings have been in place, with Scotland and North East England experiencing the worst of the weather, and snowfalls of up to 40cm in some areas."

There are black days ahead for the carbon industry

Christopher Booker, Telegraph
"It might seem mildly entertaining that the media's warmist groupies, led by the BBC, have been so eager to report the latest claims of James Hansen and Phil Jones – of Climategate fame – that 2010 is the hottest year in history, while inches of "global warming" cover Britain with its most extensive November snowfall in 17 years, heralding what promises to be our fourth unusually cold winter in a row. The explanation for the recent renewed spate of warmist scare stories lies, of course, in the fact that several thousand politicians, officials and lobbyists from all over the world are today arriving in the Mexican holiday resort of Cancun, where they hope to salvage a binding UN treaty from the wreckage of last December's fiasco in Copenhagen."

How the weather washed out a Labor Government

Andrew Bolt,Herald Sun (Australia)
"The problem for Labor was that this was an election in which one of big issues was government waste - and one of the big symbols of that waste was its desalination plant. It was first promised at $3.1 billion, but is being delivered for $5.7 billion - with water bills already soaring as a result. And with the rains filling the dams again, even Age reporters were jeering:

IT NEVER rains but it pours. After years of severe drought shaping the spending and direction of the Labor government, the deluge of 2010 has created new challenges for John Brumby in the minefield of water policy. With nearly three years’ worth of water sitting in Melbourne’s dams, Labor’s massive desalination plant looks less like a salvation and more like a hip-pocket hazard for families facing soaring water bills."

Snow Causes Traffic And Sporting Chaos In UK

Yahoo News/Sky news
"Temperatures plunged as low as -7.8C in Carterhouse, in the Scottish Borders, while parts of Oxfordshire recorded -7.6C, Newcastle -4.3C, London -3.8C and Cardiff -3.2C.

The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for widespread icy roads and heavy snow across the North East, Yorkshire and Humber, East Midlands, the east and southwest England as well as parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Forecasters have warned of more snowfall, with the unusual weather being caused by a high pressure over Greenland and low pressure in the Baltics, forcing cold winds from the northeast across Europe."

CRU Raw Temp Data Shows No Significant Warming Over Most Of The World

strata-sphere.com
"Bottom Line – Using two back-of-the-envelope tests for significance against the CRU global temperature data I have discovered:

* 75% of the globe has not seen significant peak warming or cooling changes between the period prior to 1960 and the 2000′s which rise above a 0.5°C threshold, which is well within the CRU’s own stated measurement uncertainties o +/- 1°C or worse.
* Assuming a peak to peak change (pre 1960 vs 2000′s) should represent a change greater than 20% of the measured temperature range (i.e., if the measured temp range is 10° then a peak-to-peak change of greater than 2° would be considered ‘significant’) 87% the Earth has not experienced significant temperature changes between pre 1960 period and the 2000′s. "

Examination of CRU data suggests no statistically significant warming

WUWT
"Readers may recall this quote from Dr. Phil Jones of CRU, by the BBC:

Q: Do you agree that from 1995 to the present there has been no statistically-significant global warming

A: Yes, but only just. I also calculated the trend for the period 1995 to 2009. This trend (0.12C per decade) is positive, but not significant at the 95% significance level. The positive trend is quite close to the significance level. Achieving statistical significance in scientific terms is much more likely for longer periods, and much less likely for shorter periods.

A.J. Strata has done some significance tests: ...."

Climate?

Dr Richard North
"Of course, this is just weather - and its just started to snow here in Bradford. This is the third consecutive winter where we have had snowfall before Christmas and we're fresh out of riot shields. We'll have to use the central heating.

Despite that, it is only a matter of time before some fool (many fools) tell us that it is the warmest year since Noah built his ark, warning that we are going to fry unless we pay zillion of dollars into the kitty for jungle bunnies and development corporations such as Oxfam. "

Wintry weather to last for 10 days

Telegraph
"Billy Payne, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, said: "It's going to be a very cold day. There will be sleet and snow showers around, with the worst affected areas in northern and eastern Scotland and north-east England. "There will be a covering of snow, especially over the higher ground, with wintry showers across London." He added: "The cold spell looks set to stay at least into the beginning of December. There will be low temperatures into next week, with the risk of sleet and snow showers."

NEW SALT CRISIS AS SNOW HITS UK
(Daily Express)
"Met Office forecaster John Hammond said: “All the country is at risk of snow and no region is immune. At the moment Reykjavik in Iceland has daytime temperatures similar to the UK, about 4C.” BBC forecaster Matt Taylor said: “It’s not just a short, sharp shock, it will be around well into next week. “We’ve had snow earlier than this but to have as much as this across a large part of the country at this time of year, we have to go back to about 1993.”The first taste of the Arctic chill arrived yesterday, with snow falling in North Yorkshire and in north-east Scotland, where accidents closed five roads. The big freeze begins with most widespread November snowfall in 17 years... and there's more to come

Daily Mail

"Britain awoke to the most widespread November snowfall seen for 17 years this morning.Parts of Scotland, the north of England and areas down the east coast were worst hit, with up to four inches of snow falling.Major roads ground to a halt as motorists struggled with the icy conditions. By 9am the AA had received 3,000 calls from stranded drivers.Forecasters say today's snow is the tip of the iceberg and have warned that a 10-day freeze is on the way.Even London could see a couple of inches of snow at the weekend, they predict, with daytime temperatures rising just a few degrees above freezing."

Cancún and the global warming apocalypse

"How can you tell when another climate conference is about to kick off?

When predictions of global apocalypse reach fever pitch, that’s how.

The UK Telegraph can’t be beaten on that front as it uses 11 images of ‘apocalypse’ to scare the gullible and appease hippies that it ‘cares’. UN Official Preannounces Conclusions Of The Next IPCC Report

New peer reviewed study: global warming lowers death rates

WUWT
"The doom and gloom, hell and high water howling seems to have hit a traffic obstacle in the form of a new paper in the UK that shows warmer weather saves lives. I really liked this part:

they found there were only 0.7 death per million people per year due to warming in the hottest part of the year, but a decrease of fully 85 deaths per million people per year due to warming in the coldest part of the year, for a phenomenal lives-saved to life-lost ratio of 121.4.

Downpours hit eastern Australia

BBC
"More than 200mm (8in) fell at the weekend in the Yeppoon area north of Rockhampton. Homes were flooded as water streamed off the hillsides. Further south, Gladstone had its average monthly rainfall of 58mm (2.3in) in just 2 days, contributing to what may be the town's wettest November on record. The Australian Weather Bureau says several towns have broken their November rainfall records. Proserpine had 438mm (17in), breaking its record of 27 years, while further north, Ayr measured 218mm (8.5). "

A top East European climatologist, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with UN global warming colleagues, jumps a sinking ship as ocean data signals a cooler climate.

Climate Realists
"Dr. Lucka Kajfež Bogataj left cold clear water between herself and her former UN shipmates by declaring that rising levels of airborne carbon dioxide probably don’t cause global temperatures to rise. The news scuppers hopes for a change in fortune for the beleagured UN climate agency. Their doomed ‘ship,’ the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been sailing on an ill wind ever since it was struck by that Climategate ‘torpedo’ last year.

The Slovenian climate professor made the chilling announcement last month in an obscure foreign language journal that has only now been translated into English. The lambast came in the publication Delo Polet (18/11/2010), translated into English as, "Inconvenient Truth." Inside Bogataj publishes a paper entitled, "The more we know, the better. "

It's All Over For Green Energy Agenda

GWPF
"But no sooner did the demand-and-supply equation shift out of kilter than it swung back into something more palatable and familiar. Just as it seemed that the world was running on fumes, giant oil fields were discovered off the coasts of Brazil and Africa, and Canadian oil sands projects expanded so fast, they now provide North America with more oil than Saudi Arabia. In addition, the United States has increased domestic oil production for the first time in a generation.

Meanwhile, another wave of natural gas drilling has taken off in shale rock fields across the United States, and more shale gas drilling is just beginning in Europe and Asia. Add to that an increase in liquefied natural gas export terminals around the world that connected gas, which once had to be flared off, to the world market, and gas prices have plummeted.

Energy experts now predict decades of residential and commercial power at reasonable prices. Simply put, the world of energy has once again been turned upside down."

Peak energy? What peak energy?

Telegraph
"One of the other lies told by Watermelons – when they’re not bleating about the fast-fading ‘crisis’ of “Man-Made Global Warming” – is that the earth is fast running out of scarce resources. “Even if AGW isn’t quite as true as we pretended it was a few years ago, that’s still no excuse for not taking radical action to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels,” they claim.

Isn’t it?

The Global Warming Policy Foundation (Happy anniversary, GWPF!) has collated several pieces which offer a helpful counter to this hackneyed, and too often unquestioned, eco-fascist narrative."

'Significant' snow falls predicted by mid-week as temperatures across Britain plummet to -10C

Daily Mail
"Britain is set to shiver in temperatures as low as minus ten this week with 'significant' snow falls hitting the country, the Met Office warn. The last time the mercury plummeted this low was in March - at the summit of a Scottish mountain. The north and the east of the country are in line for heavy snow, although forecasters say this could spread across Britain as we head to the weekend."

On the anniversary of Climategate the Watermelons show their true colours

Telegraph
"Watermelons: green on the outside, red on the inside. This is the theme of my forthcoming book on the controlling, poisonously misanthropic and aggressively socialistic instincts of the modern environmental movement. So how very generous that two of that movement’s leading lights should have chosen the anniversary of Climategate to prove my point entirely.

The first comes courtesy of German economist and IPCC official Ottmar Edenhofer who has openly admitted what some of us have been saying for some time: that “Climate Change” has nothing to do with man’s modest and thoroughly unthreatening contribution to global mean temperatures, nor even with the plight of baby polar bears so sweet you could almost hug them if you didn’t know they’d take your arm off in a trice. All it is, really, is a Marxist exercise in minority grievance-mongering and wealth redistribution on a global scale."

IPCC Official: “Climate Policy Is Redistributing The World's Wealth”

GWPF
"Climate policy has almost nothing to do anymore with environmental protection, says the German economist and IPCC official Ottmar Edenhofer. The next world climate summit in Cancun is actually an economy summit during which the distribution of the world's resources will be negotiated. "

BREAKING: UN IPCC Official Admits 'We Redistribute World's Wealth By Climate Policy

NewsBusters
"If you needed any more evidence that the entire theory of manmade global warming was a scheme to redistribute wealth you got it Sunday when a leading member of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change told a German news outlet, "[W]e redistribute de facto the world's wealth by climate policy." (H/T Climate Depot)

November 20, 2009: The Day “Global Warming” Ended

Climate Realists
"November 20, 2009 is an important date because it was the day that “global warming” ended. It was the day that a total fabrication, a hoax, was revealed to be the work of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), aided and abetted by a vast network of governmental and business leaders, a compliant media, and scientists who sold their souls for grants and other funding. "

Now It’s The “Ocean Change Threat” (Forget Climate Change)

NoTricksZone
"We have been told that trace gas CO2 dictates the world’s climate, overpowering the oceans and solar factors. So now we should not be surprised when someone tells us that the atmosphere dominates the behavior of the oceans, which are far more massive.

The stream of junk environmental science doesn’t stop flowing. Again a small group is trying to convince us that the tail wags the dog. Actually in this case, the flea at the end of the tail is wagging the dog (CO2 causes climate change, which in turn causes “ocean change”)."

Kracked Up Over Kratatoa: Models Have It All Wrong

World Climate Report
"It was all the rage a few years back to claim that long ago volcanic eruptions—for instance Krakatoa in 1883—were still acting to mask a large fraction of the oceanic warming that should have occurred because of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. The epitome of this argument was published in Nature magazine, by an all-star cast of scientists ever-eager to suggest that it is all our fault and then some. .....Now, a new study comes along, performed by one of the et al.’s of the Gleckler study, that basically shows that the conclusions of that original paper were quite likely incorrect, because the climate models examined had been equilibrated to an improper set of “background” conditions—conditions unnaturally free of any and all volcanic eruptions. But what about the ABC’s preference deal with the Greens?

Andrew Bolt,Herald Sun (Australia)
"However, a cursory stroll through the Greens website shows just how extreme and destructive their ideology is. It’s built on a hatred of modern Western society and as such is the logical successor to the Communist Party, just as many Greens were former communist activists or their progeny.

Let me give you a few examples of Greens positions. They want a minimum 40 per cent reduction in Australia’s 1990 greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and by 2050 they want net zero greenhouse gas emissions from Australia. Translated into broad English, that means deindustrialising our society. They want no uranium mining or export, and opposition to nuclear power everywhere, which shows how utterly fatuous their greenhouse ambitions are… All their welfare policies involve vast increases in government spending yet, of course, there is no attempt to reconcile this with their wealth destroying, anti-business agenda. "

How the Climategate weasels wriggled free

Telegraph
"Translate Hulme’s speech from academese into plain English and what it actually means is something like this: “All right. You rumbled us on Climate Change. But that’s OK. There’s always ocean acidification. And biodiversity. And whatever urgent crisis we dream up next…”

Like the Bourbons, the watermelons of the global green movement have learned nothing and forgotten nothing from Climategate. For them, AGW has never been about science or objective truth. It has always been just a pretext."

The vote was late Tuesday."

Bjorn Lomborg is Al Gore lite

Climate Realists
"Being an economist, as Lomborg claims, does not excuse him from culpability for such a flagrant misstatement.

The reality about Lomborg is that he is more like Al Gore in relevant part than not. Gore believes that manmade CO2 emissions are a problem and need to be reduced/eliminated. So does Lomborg. Gore says untrue things about skeptics. So does Lomborg. Lomborg says that alarmists should stop scaring children about global warming. Accordingly, in “Cool It,” he seems to have produced little more than “An Inconvenient Truth (Children’s Edition)”.

Here’s how I distinguish Gore from Lomborg. Gore is a scowling, straight, fat carnivore with dark hair. Lomborg is not.

Lomborg’s schtick is glibly surfing the global warming alarmist wave as a T-shirted, Scandanavian Greenpeace-turncoat-cum-skeptic-poseur. So far, only genuine skeptics have clued into to his scam, but no longer. "

Why the BBC cannot be trusted on 'Climate Change': the full story

Telegraph
"When the history of the greatest pseudoscience fraud in history -aka “Climate Change” – comes to be written, no media organisation, not even the Guardian or the New York Times, will deserve greater censure than the steaming cess pit of ecofascist bias that is the BBC. That’s because, of all the numerous MSM outlets which have been acting as the green movement’s useful idiots, the BBC is the only one which is taxpayer funded and which is required by its charter to adopt an ideologically neutral position.

How then has it managed to breach its social responsibility so frequently and flagrantly?"

'I want to be remembered for the science' says Phil 'Climategate' Jones to chorus of titters

Telegraph
"Jones goes on to express his “regrets” for the various incriminating emails which made him a global laughing stock and destroyed the credibility of the Climatic Research Unit, the IPCC and the junk science of the AGW industry generally.

Apparently, emails like the one where he referred to “Mike’s Nature Trick” being used to “Hide the decline”, and the one where he encouraged colleagues to breach FOI laws by deleting emails, were “sent in haste.”

Unlike the normal emails the rest of us send, presumably, over which we deliberate for hours and send very, very slowly."

Global Warming Loses Public Interest and Scientific Confidence Read more at Suite101: Global Warming Loses Public Interest and Scientific Confidence

John O'Sullivan
"Australia’s ABC is the latest mainstream media outlet accused of failing to be objective in how it presents key environmental issues. ABC’s “favorite psychologist” Stephan Lewandowsky now claims man-made global warming is as real as the theory of gravity.

Disgruntled Aussie geologist Marc Hendrickx has blasted back at Lewandowsky, as reported on Greenie Watch (November 11, 2010) and Hendrickx is not alone. Recently Professor Hal Lewis famously resigned from the American Physical Society rejecting the “global warming scam” and was roundly applauded by many of his peers. But as more scientists and voters reject the green hype most of the mainstream media are just not presenting both sides of the story."

The Jones “rehabilitation”

WUWT
"There’ an article in Nature Magazine which is an interview with Phil Jones of the CRU regarding his role in Climategate and what has happened in the past year. It seems to be mostly a sappy rehabilitation piece where Dr. Jones gets to play the victim and the reporter is fully sympathetic. Even more troublesome, Dr. Jones seems to have fully rationalized everything that has happened in the past year."

Cancun - more dangerous than Copenhagen

Andrew Bolt, Herald Sun (Australia)
"Dalibor Rohac warns that while the Copenhagen deal is dead, the warmists are planning even costlier ways to “save” the planet”:

Although preparations are in place for a summit on climate change in Cancun, Mexico, at the end of November, it is clear that the goal of cutting carbon emissions through coordinated action by the world’s governments is dead. Nevertheless, it would be too early to celebrate, as the threat of fear-driven and economically costly climate policies is not gone yet. It is merely being transformed into a more subtle - and potentially more dangerous - agenda

Freezing fog shrouds countryside as holly crop hints we are in for a harsh winter

Like Chernobyl, the BP Oil Spill was an accident far more terrifying in the press handouts of environmental lobbyists than it proved to be in real life. "The second keyword for the long overdue reassessment of the climatic issues is knowledge, meaning a more comprehensive and better understanding of the climate dynamics.

However, as a prerequisite it is necessary to clear up a concept commonly misused and abused by the Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) defenders: the idea that “science is settled” and that the so-called “scientific consensus” on the subject would be objected to only by some handfuls of diehard “skeptics.”

For starters, there is no such a thing like “settled science,” neither in Climatology nor in any other branch of science. The body of scientific knowledge is an open-ended and permanently ongoing construction that is always open to new evidences, new hypotheses, debate, questioning and revision – that’s how real science advances.

Also, “consensus” is a concept alien to science, which is not a “democratic” activity whose advance is driven by the weight of the number of followers of a certain line of thinking or theory – but by a permanent process of convergence between new hypotheses and evidences collected in the physical world."

"This week marks the first anniversary of Climategate and it looks as though the media are not unaware of this. As a result there are a number of stories on the climate front today.

The Guardian sets out their case that the scientists have been exonerated but that damage may have been done to "the cause".

Booker reckons the climate change movement is dying on its feet, but says that politicians are carrying on regardless. Booker's ideas seems to be echoed by Investors.com who report the Scientific American poll results and conclude that it's curtains for the warmists."

The climate change scare is dying, but do our MPs notice?

Christopher Booker,Telegraph
"The collapse of the warmist position on climate change has not impinged on politicians in Britain or Brussels .....Nothing more poignantly reflects the collapse of the great global warming scare than the decision of the Chicago Carbon Exchange, the largest in the world, to stop trading in "carbon" – buying and selling the right of businesses to continue emitting CO2.

A few years back, when the climate scare was still at its height, and it seemed the world might agree the Copenhagen Treaty and the US Congress might pass a "cap and trade" bill, it was claimed that the Chicago Exchange would be at the centre of a global market worth $10 trillion a year, and that "carbon" would be among the most valuable commodities on earth, worth more per ton than most metals. Today, after the collapse of Copenhagen and the cap and trade bill, the carbon price, at five cents a ton, is as low as it can get without being worthless.

Here in Britain, as the first snows fall, heralding what may be our fourth cold winter in a row, it is time we addressed one of the most glaring political "disconnects" in our sadly misgoverned country. "

D-Day Invasion By Climate Realists Coming

NoTricksZone
"With the AGW hypothesis collapsing all around, radical green factions and central-planning-type socialists in Germany now see that their only chance is to shut down dissent and to shield the country behind a sort of Climate-Berlin-Wall.

These zealots are really stupid enough to think they can pull this off. They ought to look back at history. Little do they know, they are about to be steamrolled by a climate realist D Day.

Even former East Germany, with absolute control over its media, border, politics, and military, all tucked away behind a wall of concrete and steel, could not pull it off. It all collapsed. Comrades, what makes you think you can keep this hoax going, especially in today’s modern communication world?"

Road to Nowhere: Lomborg’s $250 Billion Throw for Renewables a Step Back for the ‘Skeptical Environmentalist’

MasterResource
A free-market energy blog

"Conclusion

Bjorn Lomborg should be careful about what he wishes for. The unintended consequences pursuant to a renewable trough worth $250 billion has the potential to spawn a lot more nonsense, given its potential for increasing the size and direction of government and making energy policy even more political, much less meritorious. It also has the potential to thwart promising technologies by propping up pretenders, as is the case today with public support for wind, solar, and ethanol. Such lost opportunity costs, if Lomborg’s campaign is successful, are likely to be his legacy.

One must ask: Does Lomborg understand energy reality and energy density, as explained by Vaclav Smil in his five part series at MasterResource and popularized by Robert Bryce in his recent book, Power Hungry?

The skeptical environmentalist has become far too credulous."

The Winter Wonderland heads south, and there's plenty of bad weather on the way

Daily Mail

"This is the Winter Wonderland scene that greeted the early risers of County Durham today as snow moved south into England.Three inches fell overnight in the northern Pennines, and the first icicles of winter raised the prospect of a big freeze.

Yet another fraud of a “green power” scheme. And $1 billion gone

Andrew Bolt, Herald Sun (Australia)
"Yet another Labor scheme to save the planet spends far too much on simply seeming good, but achieving little:

MORE than $1 billion of taxpayers’ money was wasted on subsidies for household solar roof panels that favoured the rich and did little to reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions, a scathing review has found. ....."

PS. Have a look at the comments on Mr Bolt's blog...

“Gross” Data Errors in GHCN V2. for Australia

WUWT
"Summary

There is a lot of published criticism of the quality of NOAA’s GHCN V2. I now add some more.

In my profession, errors of this sort would cause the whole dataset to be rejected. I am astonished that the much vaunted NOAA quality control procedures did not pick up such gross errors.

The error is compounded in the sense that it propagates via V2 into the GISS database, and other users of GHCN V2."

New Retreat from Global Warming Data by Australian Gov Bureau

canadafreepress.com
"Global warmers is in full retreat as Aussie experts admit growing doubts about their own methods as a new study shows one third of temperatures are not reliable.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) admits it was wrong about urban heating effects as a professional statistical analysis by Andrew Barnham exposes a BOM claim that “since 1960 the mean temperature in Australia has increased by about 0.7 °C”; the BOM assertion has no empirical scientific basis." Climate Scientists Plan Campaign Against Global Warming Skeptics

Roy W. Spencer, Ph. D.
"OK, so, let me see if I understand this.

After 20 years, billions of dollars in scientific research and advertising campaigns, cooperation from the public schools, TV specials and concerts by a gaggle of entertainers, end-of-the-world movies, our ‘best’ politicians, heads of state, presidents, the United Nations, and complicity by most of the news media, it has been decided that the American public is not getting the message on global warming!?

Are they serious!?

Americans — hell, most of humanity — have already heard the 20 different ways we will all die miserable deaths from our emissions of that life giving — er, I mean poisonous –gas, carbon dioxide, that we are adding to the atmosphere every day.

So, NOW it no more mister nice guy? Give me a break."

Windfarm delay prompts appeal

Hexham Courant (UK)
"The developers of a windfarm near Kirkwhelpington have run out of patience with planners. ....The application for eight wind turbines and associated infrastructure attracted a large number of objections, notably from the Ministry of Defence, Newcastle Airport and the National Air Traffic Control Service.

All claimed the turbines could affect their radar facilities, with the MoD particularly concerned about the impact on RAF Spadeadam. There were also objections from three parish councils – Kirkwhelpington, Bavington and Birtley – which had multiple concerns about the scheme.Further objections came from the British Horse Society, which was concerned about the impact on a nearby bridleway. As well as the formal consultations, there were also 37 letters of objection from the general public.

The catalogue of criticism covered the effect on the landscape, the cumulative impact following the granting of other windfarm applications nearby, the effect on tourism, impact on the environment in terms of noise and health, shadow flicker, impact on wildlife, aviation issues, traffic and road safety, grid connection and the effect on TV and telecommunications."

The Best Shot

Matt Ridley
"Some weeks ago I wrote an article for The Times about why I no longer find persuasive the IPCC's arguments that today's climate change is unprecedented, fast and dangerous.

I was delighted to receive a long and courteous letter from David MacKay, the chief scientific advisor to Britain's Department of Energy and Climate Change. With his permission I am publishing my reply to that letter. I would put his letter here too (again he agrees), but I only have a hard copy of it, so that will have to follow when he has time to send me a soft version.

The remarkable thing about this exchange is that far from weakening my doubts about the IPCC case, it has strengthened them. The letter explains why. Essentially, I have realised that almost the only weapons left in the alarm locker are the retreat of the Arctic sea ice and an event that happened 55m years ago and was probably not caused by CO2 at all. Everything else -- the CO2-temperature correlation in the Antarctic ice core, the hockey stick, storm frequency, phenology, etc etc -- no longer supports the argument that something unprecedented in magnitude or rate is happening. Remarkable.

Here is my letter: "

Public carbon trading dead in the USA

WUWT
"Collapse is Personal Setback for U.S. President

Barack Obama was a board member of the Joyce Foundation that funded the fledgling CCX. Professor Richard Sandor, of Northwestern University had started the business with $1.1 million in grants from the Chicago-based left-wing Joyce Foundation enthusiastically endorsed by Obama. When founded in November 2000, CCX’s carbon trading market was predicted to grow anywhere between $500 billion and $10 trillion. Fortunately before its collapse Sandor was able to net $98.5 million for his 16.5% stake when CCX was sold.

Failure of European Climate Market May Follow

Milloy writes, “although the trading in carbon emissions credits was voluntary, the CCX was intended to be the hub of the mandatory carbon trading established by a cap-and-trade law. Trading carbon was, “the only purpose for which it was founded.” But with their resurgence after the mid-terms the Republicans have now put a new cohort of global warming skeptics into the corridors of power.

Unlike the American voluntary scheme, the European cousin of the CCX, the European Climate Exchange (ECX), continues to trade due to the mandatory carbon caps of the Kyoto Protocol. But the future of the ECX will be in doubt unless a new climate treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol is introduced. That treaty expires in 2012. But the ineffectual Copenhagen Climate Conference (2009) exposed an inability among international politicians to agree on climate change. If this stalement persists then the European ECX may likely suffer the same fate as Chicago’s CCX."

The solar panel gold rush that threatens to ruin our countryside...and make millions for the Germans and Chinese

Daily Mail
"Farmers are being offered up to £50,000 a year to fill fields with solar panels under a Government-backed green initiative that threatens to change the face of the British countryside.More than 100 planning applications have been submitted and work on a large-scale installation in Wiltshire is due to begin later this month. But with a 30-acre farm able to accommodate up to 18,000 of the 2ft-high panels, campaigners fear some rural areas could be submerged by a sea of black silicon slabs. The ‘Feed-in Tariff’ scheme was launched in April as part of an attempt to meet European Union targets on renewable energy. But the financial incentives are so generous that farmers are being cold-called by developers keen to sign contracts before the payment structure is reviewed in 2012.

The influx is led by German and Chinese companies, but there is also interest from speculators who have seen profits slump since similar schemes were scaled down or abandoned in Spain, Italy and Germany to cut costs.Dustin Benton, senior policy officer at the Campaign to Protect Rural England, said: ‘There is a real push now by developers to make the most of the short time-window. Solar panels are a useful form of renewable energy but there are many places where they should not go.’

Another letter from Hal Lewis to the American Physical Society

WUWT
"When on October 6 I sent you my letter of resignation from APS , I of course expected the Empire to strike back in one way or another. It pleased me however, when I read your response, to find a very minimum of ad hominem attacks, confined mostly to apparently irresistible eruptions of “Lewis is a liar.” (“His statements are all false” is the equivalent.) So I thank you for that courtesy.

What took me by surprise was the pusillanimous, almost puerile, tone of the comment, which reads more like an ad for a used-car lot than as a declaration of a great scientific society. All our products have passed a complete inspection by our factory-trained mechanics. We’re making no money on this, take it and be thankful. Etc. Not a single major issue confronted in any substantive way. Yet everyone knows about the sloppy handling of the 2007 statement; everyone knows about the financial investments of many of the major players; there is plenty of dirt in the public domain, yet you continue to pretend it is all in a different universe."

Climate Change: The Keywords (Part 1 of 3)

WUWT
"In the not too distant future, it will likely be difficult to understand how so many educated people believed in and accepted uncritically for so long a scientifically unproven theory like the so-called Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW).

Taken almost as a dogma, the AGW has been forcefully imposed by means of a barrage of scare stories and indoctrination that begins in the elementary school textbooks and is volleyed relentlessly upon us by the media and many scientific institutions (including some pseudo-scientific ones), while gullible or opportunistic politicians devise all possible means of inserting climate-motivated items into their power-seeking schemes."

Dumb Meteorologists – Part II

NoTricksZone
"Yesterday I wrote here about an expedition that included a Canadian meteorologist/journalist Jocelyne Blouin whose documentary tried to convince us that a single receding glacier at a single location in Greenland over the last 10 years was “direct proof “of climate change and so was justification to “act now”. The target of the documentary of course was to spread panic and heighten the level of urgency. ...The claim that there is a CO2 cause, as Blouin asserts, and that the warming is unusual has no merit. Also ice cores show that Greenland was very warm 900 years ago, during the MWP. In short: Madame Blouin est plein merde."

The Indonesian volcano has been spewing 800°C ash clouds for days. .....A rough estimate indicates that there is three times more magma than what was ejected by the Indonesian volcano Tambora in 1815 – the biggest eruption in the last 10,000 years, which led to a cooling of the climate globally.'

Should our biggest climate change fear be fear itself?

WUWT
"From apocalyptic forecasting to estimates of mass extinctions, climate change is a topic which is filled with fearful predictions for the future. In his latest research, published in WIREs Climate Change, historian Matthias Dörries examines the cultural significance of fear and how it became a central presence in current debates over climate change. Climatic change, as represented by the media, often prompts headlines predicting disastrous events, frequently adopting fear laden language including analogies with war and warnings of the imminence or irreversibility of pending catastrophes. For Professor Matthias Dörries from the University of Strasbourg, a culture of fear is alive, and doing very well."

Why being Green means never having to say you're sorry

Telegraph
"Anyway, watching Channel 4’s What The Green Movement Got Wrong last night I felt very much like the Other Son. The documentary was a celebration of the fact that two notable green campaigners – Mark Lynas and Stewart Brand (creator of the Whole Earth Catalog) had finally come round to appreciating that some of the key tenets of their Green religion were flawed and had in fact done more harm than good. ...Green campaigners like Brand and Lynas have not only caused massive damage to the global economy – the biotech and nuclear industry, especially – but they have also almost certainly contributed to numerous deaths in the Third World."

Obama Moves Away From `Cap and Trade,' Seeks New Tools

Bloomberg
"Futures contracts in the U.S. Northeast’s carbon market fell to their lowest level in six weeks yesterday after Obama’s remarks.

Obama spoke the day after Republicans won control of the House of Representatives and gained at least six seats in the Senate after a campaign in which Republican candidates and some Democrats denounced cap-and-trade as a disguised energy tax. A cap-and-trade bill backed by Obama passed the House last year, then stalled in the Senate this year.

Prospects for a U.S. carbon market are more remote than before the election because “the vast majority of Republicans have opposed cap-and-trade proposals to date,” Peter Shattuck, a carbon-markets policy analyst at Environment Northeast, an advocacy group based in Rockport, Maine, said in a telephone interview. Solar-powered trough

Andrew Bolt, Herald Sun (Australia)
" PLANNING Minister Tony Kelly stands to make three times as much as many other households for solar power after he applied for a subsidy last week, only hours before the benefits were cut back. Mr Kelly now joins Premier Kristina Keneally in facing accusations of trying to profit when the overly generous scheme was under review and, in his case, about to be slashed. Ms Keneally bought solar panels for her home within days of her Government announcing a review in August, when it became clear it had become so popular it would add billions electricity costs. Mr Kelly signed up for the 60c per kW/h subsidy within hours of Ms Keneally announcing last Wednesday that the scheme would be slashed to 20c from midnight that night after legislation was rushed through Parliament… After Ms Keneally’s purchase was revealed, the Premier said she would accept the lower subsidy as “a sign of good faith”.

Mann in New Scientist

"Michael Mann has been given space in New Scientist to say nothing, well, New.

I'D LIKE to say I was surprised when news broke a year ago that emails from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, UK, had been hacked into and leaked, and that scientists' personal emails were being quoted out of context to disingenuously imply impropriety on their part. But I wasn't.

As so, so many people have noted, the emails are much, much worse in context.

Global Warming Elitism, Tomorrow’s Election, and The Future

Roy W. Spencer, Ph. D.
"Manmade Global Warming as the Justification

Since I believe the majority of what we now view as “climate change” is just part of a natural cycle in the climate system, I argued from the outset that NASA should be also selling “Mission to Planet Earth” as a way to better prepare ourselves for natural climate change — something that history tells us has indeed occurred, and we can be assured will occur again.

But behind the scenes there was a strong push for policy changes that even most of the scientists involved supported — ultimately culminating in the governmental control over how much and the kinds of energy sources humanity would be allowed to use in the future.

Cap and Trade, as well as potential regulation of carbon dioxide emissions by the EPA, are the fruits of the labor of politicians, governmental representatives, bureaucrats, the United Nations, and activist scientists who have used global warming as an excuse to accomplish policy goals that would have never been accomplished on their own merits.

Of course, most who speak out on this issue continue to point to the supposed “scientific consensus” on global warming as the justification, but those of us who knew the players also knew of these other motives."

Climate Control Hinges On Today’s US Election

"Two years ago the German and European media made Obama their darling, portraying him as the savior that had delivered America and the world from the clutches of the evil Bush regime. A year later he was even awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for doing so. But that has since turned out to be a certificate of failure (think Gore, Arafat and a host of others)."
