"Carbon (Dioxide) trading is now the fastest growing commodities market on earth.....And here’s the great thing about it. Unlike traditional commodities markets, which will eventually involve delivery to someone in physical form, the carbon (dioxide) market is based on lack of delivery of an invisible substance to no-one. Since the market revolves around creating carbon (dioxide) credits, or finding carbon (dioxide) reduction projects whose benefits can then be sold to those with a surplus of emissions, it is entirely intangible." (Telegraph)
This blog has been tracking the 'Global Warming Scam' for over ten years now. There are a very large number of articles being published in blogs and more in the MSM who are waking up to the fact the public refuse to be conned any more and are objecting to the 'green madness' of governments and the artificially high price of energy. This blog will now be concentrating on the major stories as we move to the pragmatic view of 'not if, but when' and how the situation is managed back to reality. To quote Professor Lindzen, "a lot of people are going to look pretty silly"

Solar ‘Gold Rush’ in U.K. May Die With Incentive Roll-Back
"Britain is moving faster than any other European country to contain a surge in solar power and prevent the boom-and-bust seen in Spain and predicted for the Czech Republic. The risk is scaring off the investors who would create the “green jobs” Prime Minister David Cameron is seeking to revive the economy.
“It’s going to completely kill the market,” said Tim German, renewable energy manager for the local government in Cornwall at the U.K.’s southwest tip. “Investors are starting to get cold feet.”
Energy MPs foresee terrible future of clean, cheap energy , Shale – don't know what it is, we'd better stop it
"With so many vested interests upset by shale, no wonder it's so popular!
Yet the economic benefits of an abundance of cheaper energy can't be overstressed: cheaper manufactured goods, energy independence, and an end to the obscenity of fuel poverty, where the poorest freeze – and pay to subsidise solar panels on the roofs of the wealthy. There are 5.5m UK households today living in "fuel poverty" – and thanks to carbon emissions targets and renewables commitments, the average household will have to pay £300 extra every year to 2020."
Why the £250bn wind power industry could be the greatest scam of our age - and here are the three 'lies' that prove it
"The first is the pretence that turbines are anything other than ludicrously inefficient. The most glaring dishonesty peddled by the wind industry — and echoed by gullible politicians — is vastly to exaggerate the output of turbines by deliberately talking about them only in terms of their 'capacity', as if this was what they actually produce. Rather, it is the total amount of power they have the capability of producing. The point about wind, of course, is that it is constantly varying in speed, so that the output of turbines averages out at barely a quarter of their capacity. ...The second great lie about wind power is the pretence that it is not a preposterously expensive way to produce electricity. No one would dream of building wind turbines unless they were guaranteed a huge government subsidy. This comes in the form of the Renewables Obligation Certificate subsidy scheme, paid for through household bills, whereby owners of wind turbines earn an additional £49 for every 'megawatt hour' they produce, and twice that sum for offshore turbines. This is why so many people are now realising that the wind bonanza — almost entirely dominated in Britain by French, German, Spanish and other foreign-owned firms — is one of the greatest scams of our age. .....The third great lie of the wind propagandists is that this industry is somehow making a vital contribution to 'saving the planet' by cutting our emissions of CO2.Even if you believe that curbing our use of fossil fuels could change the Earth's climate, the CO2 reduction achieved by wind turbines is so insignificant that one large windfarm saves considerably less in a year than is given off over the same period by a single jumbo jet flying daily between Britain and America. ....All over the EU, other politicians are waking up to the dead-end to which this madness has been leading us.The Danes, who have built more wind turbines per head than anyone, have realised the idiocy of a policy that has given them the highest electricity prices in Europe, while they have to import much of their power from abroad. In Spain, their rush for wind and solar power has proved a national disaster. In Germany, having built more turbines than any other country in the world, they are now building new coal-fired stations like crazy. In Holland, meanwhile, they have now given two fingers to the EU by slashing all their renewables subsidies."
The real cost of 'global warming'
"The renewable energy industry is helping to destroy the UK economy and drive up unemployment says a new report. For every one of David Cameron’s “green jobs” created in the renewable energy sector (mainly solar and wind), another 3.7 jobs are being lost in the real economy, says the independent study by Verso Economics. In total, measurable policies to promote renewable energy cost £1.4 billion in the UK and £168 million in Scotland in 2009/10. But this doesn’t take into account the additional economic damage inflicted by the erection of enormous, bird-chopping monstrosities all over some of Britain’s most attractive tourist spots – including, for example, the hitherto unspoilt island of Tiree."
Voters really don’t like getting lied to
"Essential Research has the first poll since Julia Gillard’s “carbon tax” lie hit the headlines - and it could mark the beginning of the end of Gillard’s leadership. And since half the poll of this fortnightly-averaged survey comes from the week before Gillard’s carbon tax announcement, the result is even worse than it looks."

The greatest green folly in Victoria’s history
"See what green madness, unchecked, can lead to. Ask why almost no journalists or academics even questioned this gigantic folly at the time:
MELBURNIANS will face rocketing water bills over the next 30 years to pay for the state’s desalination plant.Premier Ted Baillieu yesterday admitted the contract signed by the former Labor Government couldn’t be broken and the “white elephant’’ desalination plant could cost a maximum $23.9 billion…The desalinated water will cost up to $13.50 a kilolitre - compared to just $1 for our current supplies.A review by PriceWaterhouseCoopers shows the cost of the project will run to $19.3 billion without any water being sent to homes.
And think what the alternative was - the dam that the Labor Government would not even mention for years."

Unscientific hype about the flooding risks from climate change will cost us all dear
"As the great global warming scare continues to crumble, attention focuses on all those groups that have a huge interest in keeping it alive. Governments look on it as an excuse to raise billions of pounds in taxes. Wind farm developers make fortunes from the hidden subsidies we pay through our electricity bills. A vast academic industry receives more billions for concocting the bogus science that underpins the scare. Carbon traders hope to make billions from corrupt schemes based on buying and selling the right to emit CO2. But no financial interest stands to make more from exaggerating the risks of climate change than the re-insurance industry, which charges retail insurers for “catastrophe cover”, paid for by all of us through our premiums. Freeman Dyson v the 'Independent'
"Professor Dyson says:
I wish that The Independent would live up to its name and present a less one-sided view of the issues.
He’s talking, of course, about the ‘Independent’s’ stance on AGW. Of all the British media, not even the Guardian’s Environment pages have quite matched the zeal with which the Indie has promoted the great Man Made Global Warming narrative. Professor Dyson – born in Britain 87 years ago, a scholar at Winchester but a naturalised American, now based at Princeton university is not altogether convinced that the Indie’s alarmism has any factual basis whatsoever.
Here are some of the highlights. (Yes, it’s familiar stuff: but how good it is to see a man of Professor Dyson’s standing and intellect expressing it with such confidence and clarity)."

Foiled by the winter: The £25,000 eco-classroom that can't be used because solar panels don't provide enough heat
"It boasts laudable green credentials and is made from sustainable wood, sheep’s wool and soil. The roof is made of mud and grass and it has its own ‘rain pod’ and solar panels. But there is snag - its solar panels only provide enough energy to power a few lightbulbs. As a result the classroom is bitterly cold and uninhabitable for lessons.Parents have branded it ‘useless’, an ‘expensive piece of wood’ and a ‘great idea for the Caribbean’.The Living Ark was built at Muswell Hill Primary School, North London, at the cost of £25,000. Local councillors, at Labour run Haringey council, who were behind the initiative, opened it with great fanfare in December as a beacon of their climate change policy. But today a local parent at the 419-pupil school said teachers weren't allowing pupils into the classroom because it was too cold.
‘What is the point of a classroom that can’t be used when it’s a bit cold outside? My kids have been told it’s too cold for them to use as nobody can figure out how to heat it,’ said the parent, who did not want to be named.
‘This is just an expensive piece of hollowed out wood and no use to anyone. We are living in Britain, not the Caribbean.’
Julia Gillard strikes deal with Greens on carbon pricing
"TONY Abbott says Julia Gillard's new price on carbon pollution is a "betrayal" that will increase average family power bills by $300 and hike petrol prices by 6.5 cents.
The Prime Minister today announced a carbon price would start on July 1 2012 if she could get legislation passed in federal Parliament. In a deal with the Greens, Ms Gillard said tackling climate change and cutting pollution was critical for Australia’s clean energy future."

Snow Like 1976
"In summary: How do I know it’s not warmer? Because for the first time since 1978 (when I moved here) I’m going off to the local nursery to investigate “cloches” and “frost row covers”… (During our “false spring” I went ahead and started some “8 Ball” or Ronde du Nice squash and some of the giant purple pod bean seeds. Now I either get to do frost protection or I get to pot them on and continue growing them inside the house…
So when you are in “Sunny” San Jose and looking at Snow at sea level for the first time in 35 years, well, that’s not “Global Warming”, that’s just cold…
I’m putting a North America Freeze Level map here so it’s easy for me, and you, to keep tabs on what’s happening."

Beware the global warming fascists: Johnny Ball on how he has been vilified for daring to question green orthodoxy
"Blinded, maybe even brainwashed by the climate-change zealots, we are spending so much money on reducing carbon emissions that there is a danger of us bankrupting ourselves — and future generations — to solve a problem that in the opinions of a growing number of scientists and opinion-formers has been wildly exaggerated.
To put it another way, those who have been worshipping so ardently at the altar of reduced carbon emissions — and how quickly they adopted the messianic zeal and intolerance of a religion — may find that they have been deifying not just a false god but a ruinously expensive one, too."
DIY Gasoline and Diesel from Wood and Trash
"Yes, you too can make gasoline and Diesel in the privacy of your own garage from lawn clippings and wood chips. Just don’t tell the fire marshal, your neighbors, or your insurance company 8-)"
The great green con that'll cost you £300 a year
"Expert Dr Brenda Boardman estimates those in fuel poverty have paid £200 million towards carbon emissions through higher bills, but have received back only £125 million from energy efficiency measures.Yet the Government continues to push ahead with charging everyone for its 'green' schemes, with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) saying last year that the cost of climate change policies could hit £300 per household by 2020."
Terminal decline
"...With that firmly lodged, the paper has already told us that every home in Britain could be paying £300 a year through their gas and electricity bills by 2020 to fund climate change schemes. The cost to consumers is £84 a year, most which comes from the CERT which currently costs each household £45 a year and will increase to £52 a year from April.
So the story goes on, but the detail does not matter – to us at least. Two things here are significant, the headline and the tone. Once Middle England's favourite newspaper starts talking seriously about a "green con" and then gives chapter and verse, the greenie days are numbered and the honeymoon is over.
Basically, this confirms that the global warming religion is in terminal decline. It might have a long, long way to go before it finally slides into the obscurity it so richly deserves, but no faith-based movement can be labelled a "con" by one of the nation's best-selling newspapers and survive. Even if the politicians don't realise it yet, it's over."
Hiding the Decline
"McIntyre’s analysis is sufficiently well documented that it is difficult to imagine that his analysis is incorrect in any significant way. If his analysis is incorrect, it should be refuted. I would like to know what the heck Mann, Briffa, Jones et al. were thinking when they did this and why they did this, and how they can defend this, although the emails provide pretty strong clues. Does the IPCC regard this as acceptable? I sure don’t.
Can anyone defend “hide the decline”? I would much prefer to be wrong in my interpretation, but I fear that I am not." (Judith Curry)

Met Office undermined by evidence to Transport Committee
"As one would expect from the unreconstructed propaganda the Met Office likes to spread about itself, the submission they have made can be summarised as claiming to have got all their forecasts right, that the public and Met Office customers agree and everything is just peachy, with only some minor lessons learned with respect to further developing the National Severe Weather Warning Service. .....As Freedom of Information requests have shown, the Met Office advice somewhat different to what they now claim. Where is the mention of there being ‘no clear signals for the winter’? Where is the admission that while the chance of an average or colder winter was 70%, they believed the chance of an average or warmer winter was 60%? What about their agreement with the Cabinet Office that there was only ‘a slightly increased risk for a cold and wintry start to the winter season’? Clearly they have forgotten their own advice below: ..."
NYC’s seasonal snowfall: 3rd largest on record

On the House Vote to Defund the IPCC
"Politicians formed the IPCC over 20 years ago with an endgame in mind: to regulate CO2 emissions. I know, because I witnessed some of the behind-the-scenes planning. It is not a scientific organization. It was organized to use the government-funded scientific research establishment to achieve policy goals. .....But the climate science community has allowed itself to be used on this issue, and as a result, politicians, activists, and the media have successfully portrayed the biased science as settled.
They apparently do not realize that ‘settled science’ is an oxymoron.
The most vocal climate scientists defending the IPCC have lost their objectivity. Yes, they have what I consider to be a plausible theory. But they actively suppress evidence to the contrary, for instance attempts to study natural explanations for recent warming. "

No warming for a decade
"Dr Lucia Liljegren notes there has been no warming for a decade, when the IPCC predicted a decadal warming of 0.2 degrees (orange line.):
I’d been wondering if any of the computed trends since 2001 would reach 0.2C/decade during the past El Nino. As we all know, they did not. Naturally, we can’t know with certainty what will happen during the upcoming El Nino, particularly as rumor has it, the sun “woke up”.
The warming since 1980 now seems to be more of a step than an incline: ..."
Reader Tony S:
The HadCrut January anomaly cooled to just 0.194 C.The decadal trend is still negative whilst the IPCC projected 0.2C warming. The IPCC uses the Hadcrut dataset.
January 2011 was colder than Dec 1972 (0.197C) .That’s no warming in 39 years. Yes I know that’s cherry picking, and the linear trend is warming. But in absolute terms, it can’t be claimed that the earth is warmer than Dec 1972."
Wind farms: can't live with them; could very much do without them…
"Well, how could it be when, no matter where you go in the world these days evidence of the absurdity of the great man made global warming disaster is all around you? ....About five miles from Monschau is the Eifel – the forested zone in which the Germans concealed their men and materiel prior to the Ardennes offensive Wacht am Rhein. And apart from pine trees guess what now dominate this beautiful National Park designated area? That’s right. The very unphotogenic, ungemutlich sight of massive white wind turbines. And see if you can guess what all 15 or so of those wind turbines weren’t doing as we drove past, thinking how much prettier and more natural the area would look without them? "
NOAA’s CSI explains record snows: global warming not involved
"Specifically, they wanted to know if human-induced global warming could have caused the snowstorms due to the fact that a warmer atmosphere holds more water vapor. The CSI Team’s analysis indicates that’s not likely. They found no evidence — no human “fingerprints” — to implicate our involvement in the snowstorms."

The Myth of Green Energy Jobs: The European Experience
"Both economic theory and the experience of European countries that have attempted to build a green-energy economy that will create green jobs reveal that such thinking is deeply fallacious. Spain, Italy, Germany, and Denmark have all tried and failed to accomplish positive outcomes with renewable energy. Some will suggest that the United States is different, and that US planners will have the wisdom to make the green economy work here. But there is no getting around the fact that you do not improve your economy or create jobs by breaking windows, and US planners are no more omniscient than those in Europe."

Green lobby propaganda
'By running thousands of model runs they demonstrate that human induced climate change did have a significant influence on the occurrence of the destructive floods in the UK in year 2000.'
ED: Best summed up in the comments...
"We are not at more risk of flooding, developers have simply built all over the known flood plains. If there is a 'New' risk is that older properties are being flooded because Medieval flood levels were reached - in some areas. We did not have an even distribution of rainfall across the country. Even when Tewkesbury was flooded that year we had hosepipe bans. Either adapt flood risk developments or abandon them, but do not blame GW. Despite computer models the real weather is completely unpredictable !".

Floods are manmade, you say now? (Climate Change Dispatch)
"And what are these two (TWO! shouted the believers) papers based on (AND don’t forget they’re from Nature)? The new-found certainty comes from about 50 years of records, interpreted by climate models, with those results then fed into precipitation models (just to magnify the error-margins even further). The handy thing about models is that if you try hard enough you can get nearly any result you want."

How the green lobby smears its enemies
"To those of us who were children between the early 1960s and and the early nineties, Johnny Ball was always something of hero. First he presented Play School, later he presented the maths entertainment series Think Of A Number. .....So it saddens me greatly to read today how his career has been blighted as a result of smear campaigns over his climate change scepticism: ...Something very similar, of course, has happened to another popular children’s TV presenter and science communicator of the same generation, botanist David Bellamy: ......"It was in 1996 that I criticised wind farms while appearing on Blue Peter and I also had an article published in which I described global warming as poppycock."
Climate zealots made my life hell for being a sceptic says Johnny Ball, who was victim of porn and blog smears
'Several films have been introduced into schools which imply that the earth may not be able to sustain human life as we know it, in around 39 years’ time, which is unscientific, alarmist nonsense'
Tesco shelves solar power plans
"The UK’s largest retailer Tesco has announced that, for the time being, it will be shelving plans to install solar panels on a number of its distribution centres after the government announced possible subsidy changes. If a review of subsidies does affect the feed-in tariff on projects producing more than 50kW, then Tesco’s plans to install banks of panels producing 1MW could prove to be uneconomical."
The Carbon Brief – The European rapid response team

A look at their further resources page gives the first two links as the Climate Science Rapid Response Team and RealClimate and it also include Climate Progress. There are no sceptical or even lukewarm website or blog links of any kind. .......The Carbon Brief appears to have been set up for the specific purpose of countering sceptical stories relating to ‘climate change’ by going to AGW consensus scientific sources for an instant rebuttal. It is a project of the Energy and Strategy Centre, funded and supported by the European Climate Foundation (ECF)".

Spectator Debate - The global warming hysteria is over. Time for a return to sanity
"The number of people in the UK who do not believe in global warming has doubled in the last two years, according to a poll from the Office for National Statistics. Does this represent an alarming success in a war against science? Or the common sense of a British public who can see the claims of the climate alarmists dissolve before their eyes?".
Northern New Brunswick wind turbines frozen solid
"FREDERICTON — A $200-million wind farm in northern New Brunswick is frozen solid, cutting off a potential supply of renewable energy for NB Power. The 25-kilometre stretch of wind turbines, located 70 kilometres northwest of Bathurst, N.B. has been completely shutdown for several weeks due to heavy ice covering the blades.GDF SUEZ Energy, the company that owns and operates the site, is working to return the windmills to working order, a spokeswoman says."

Gillard gives Greens a 5.5 per cent cut of her flood levy
"Julia Gillard’s flood levy to rebuild Quensland is now also a Greens levy to for mad green schemes that Labor admitted only two weeks ago were a huge waste of money:
The Australian Greens will support the federal government’s $1.8 billion flood levy in parliament.Senator Brown said he held intensive negotiations with Prime Minister Julia Gillard on the issue and funds which had been cut from some green programs have been restored. The solar flagships program has had the $60 million restored for the current program and $40 million which was to be put beyond the forward estimates bought back,’ he said.
That’s $100 million of the $1.8 million spent just to buy the Greens’ vote. ..."
The Tomato Knows
"Well, we had a cold spell a few weeks back. It froze all the way down to Mexico. Now the impact on tomatoes is being felt all over North America. This is just another example of the Tomato being a more truthful indicator of “climate change” than all the manipulated numbers in the world.
Now this event is NOT spectacular in any way. It happened a few decades back too. I have foggy memories of “ask for a tomato” on your Burger King and “no tomato salad bars”. It’s not real common, but it does happen. ......
Bottom Line
The “bottom line” is pretty simple. In a warming world, crops that need extra heat to grow would be growing better. Cotton is heat loving. I can just barely get it to set bolls IF I start it very early and have a warm year. I didn’t even try this past year as it was just too cool. In a warming world, the price of cotton would be falling as cotton would flourish. Instead we have cotton running higher in a parabolic blow off to the moon: ..."
Piers Corbyn: Biggest Solar flare for 4 years (TL) prelude to WeatherAction Top Red Weather warning 18/19 Feb
"For Britain + Ireland & Europe The mild attack from the West will intensify but so will the cold blast from the East so "Let battle commence". The enhanced collision of air masses also predicts (extra) gales.
Piers added "It should go without saying that these events are nothing whatsoever to do with CO2 whether from man or nature and increases of CO2 have demonstrably zero affect on the weather. I wonder: For how much longer must we endure the falsity on weather events and climate spouted by Governments and the warmist anti-science sect in their employ?"

A request for an audit of our temperature figures
"Jo Nova, Senator Cort Barnardi and others send the Auditor General a formal request. Nova explains:
A team of skeptical scientists, citizens, and an Australian Senator have lodged a formal request with the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) to have the BOM and CSIRO audited.
The BOM claim their adjustments are “neutral” yet Ken Stewart showed that the trend in the raw figures for our whole continent has been adjusted up by 40%. The stakes are high. Australians could have to pay something in the order of $870 million dollars thanks to the Kyoto protocol, and the first four years of the Emissions Trading Scheme was expected to cost Australian industry (and hence Australian shareholders and consumers) nearly $50 billion dollars. ....."

The insanity and waste in Britain’s Town Halls.
"These days, ‘climate change’ is the new Aids. So no self-respecting Town Hall is complete without a global warming department. They’re so busy saving the polar bears that they can’t actually be bothered to empty the dustbins once a week. While councils were setting up their boardwalk empires, the level of genuine public services collapsed. Bus services were withdrawn, streets went unswept, school buildings fell into disrepair, while flash new civic centres were commissioned, costing tens of millions of pounds, to house the burgeoning Soviet-style army of apparatchiks."
Climate scepticism: not just the new paedophilia, but the new racism and homophobia too!
"Well, I agree with Prof Beddington on one thing – as I’m sure do all of us evil, paedophilic, homophobic, Holocaust-denying, racist climate sceptics. If there’s one thing we absolutely can’t stand its scientists who “cherry-pick facts”, who fail to use “scientific evidence” and who fail to use “scientific method.” That’s why we got so worked up over the Climategate emails, which very clearly revealed those “climate scientists” whose expertise Prof Beddington so reveres committing the very crimes he so deplores.
So doesn’t that mean that by effectively endorsing the Climategate scientists disgraceful behaviour and by actively promulgating their shoddy, mendacious work, Prof Beddington is the moral equivalent of a double-double-extra racist, and a paedophile, and a Holocaust denier and homophobe too? Just asking."

Beddington on warpath (Bishop Hill)
"Now, we sceptics have been mightily concerned about cherrypicking. Indeed, we raised the issue with several of the Climategate inquiries. Of the investigations into Jones et al, it was the Oxburgh inquiry, that of course had the most reason to investigate the question of cherrypicking at the Climatic Research Unit: who can forget the selection of proxy series for Osborn and Briffa, for example? That was certainly one that raised a few eyebrows.
But as we know, Lord Oxburgh and his panel decided not to look at this paper and their report is silent on the question of cherrypicking.
And how did Sir John Beddington react? I'm sure readers here remember that he wrote to Lord Oxburgh telling him that he had "played a blinder". Perhaps being inside a university gives you some kind of immunity from Sir John's wrath."
Russian Winter: severe cold to invade Moscow and Eastern Europe
"However, during this week and the next ten-days, a brutal Arctic blast is poised to engulf Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, and become even colder as it pushes eastward — crossing the Urals through Russia — beneath a powerful dome of high pressure. Daily temperature anomalies will range from 15° to 35°C below normal, which is already very cold in February. In familiar Fahrenheit: Moscow will likely see near -30°F with surrounding areas -40° to -50°F. Eastward in Central Russia and Siberia during the next several days, temperatures will likely test the -60°F range. "

Here’s What Gives Science A Bad Name
"TerraDaily reports today of Jeffrey Kiehl’s “Lessons from Earth’s Past“, actually published by Science magazine a month ago. A cursory reading is what is needed to understand how flawed Kiehl’s whole idea is, of focusing on a question like:
when was the last time Earth’s atmosphere contained as much carbon dioxide as it may by the end of this century?
(Kiehl’s answer: 35 Million years ago)
How flawed is that question? Very, very flawed. For the geologically-challenged readers of this blog, here’s an in-depth commentary of Kieh’s rag(*) by Doug L. Hoffmann at Resilient Earth, summarized by this quote: ......"
It Isn’t a Conspiracy – It’s Just Money, Fashion & Power
"This explains why Big Oil has thrown far more money at those who embrace the green perspective than those who articulate the skeptic one. But this is where things start to get disturbing. Due to the fact that corporate entities have made huge investments in green technology they now have a financial interest in protecting those investments.
This is no joke. If much of the world were to suddenly snap out of it and realize that global warming has been seriously over-hyped, very large and powerful companies in wealthy and influential sectors of the economy – energy, insurance, and finance – would lose hundreds of billions. Pielk Sr. on the 30 year random walk in surface temperature record
"The 2011 Bye et al GRL paper conclusion reads
“In 1935, the International Meteorological Organisation confirmed that ‘climate is the average weather’ and adopted the years 1901-1930 as the ‘climate normal period’. Subsequently a period of thirty years has been retained as the classical period of averaging (IPCC 2007). Our analysis suggests that this administrative decision was an inspired guess. Random walks of length about 30 years within natural variability are an ‘inconvenient truth’ which must be taken into account in the global warming debate. This is particularly true when the causes of trends in the temperature record are under consideration.”
This paper is yet another significant contribution that raises further issues on the use of multi-decadal linear surface temperature trends to diagnose climate change."
Are climate change deniers worse than paedophiles?
"Michael Buerk made a remark on BBC Radio 4’s The Moral Maze last week which has excited a lot of comment.
“Not long ago, to question multiculturalism…risked being branded racist and pushed into the loathesome corner with paedophiles and climate change deniers….”
Like Bishop Hill and Archbishop Cranmer, I don’t think he was being serious. As the Archbishop has noticed, Michael Buerk is far more likely to have been having another dig at the BBC’s culture of political correctness."

World of two halves! Map shows most of Northern Hemisphere is covered in snow and ice
"The shroud of white stretches down from Alaska and sweeps through the Midwest and along to the Eastern seaboard. The bitter cold has reached as far as Texas and northern Mexico where in Ciudad Juarez temperatures today were expected to dip to minus 15C.
In the U.S. tens of millions of people chose to stay at home rather than venture out. In Chicago, 20in of snow fell leading to authorities closing schools for the first time in 12 years. The newspaper for Tulsa, Okalahoma, was unable to publish its print edition for the first time in more than a century."
“Climate committee” is a government advertising scheme by any other name.
"The Government says it wants a “climate expert” to sell the message to the public, and who do they pick? A small mammal expert whose predictions on the climate are so wrong any normal person would slink off in shame. But not Flannery, the Teflon prophet, reality doesn’t stick to him. How can it be that the outrageously wrong get away with it with reputations intact (and get rewarded too)? Blame the mainstream media. Blame also a government that thinks it’s a good use of public money to promote known failures.
Flannery will be paid $180,000 a year to be part-time chairman of the Gillard Government’s Climate Commission, to convince us to agree to her plans to “put a price on carbon”. In other words, he’s not an expert in climate science but in science-PR. Bolt describes how Flannery changes his PR tune to suit his employers. The man has no scruples.
He claims the “committee is independent”. But we all know that they will come to no other conclusion that to support a tax, call carbon “pollution”, and rave about all the evidence (that they can’t name specifically). That $5.6 million dollar committee is just a thinly disguised $5.6 million dollar advertising campaign.
Despite the reality of floods when he predicted droughts, of 3mm sea level rises when he predicted a meter a year, Flannery is not going to admit he was wrong, or that he helped waste taxpayer funds. Nor that his promotion of a culture of endless drought may have influenced the managers of a certain dam to store water even as deadly flood water collected around them. People blame skeptics already for hypothetical deaths that may come, but bad science is already killing people."

Before you scream “global warming” … two items of fact about Brisbane
"In 1972, Hugh Lunn interviewed the director of the Bureau of Meteorology in Queensland, Arch Shields, and was warned that one day Brisbane would be hit by floods as it had been hit before:
We mounted many flights of stairs to his new eyrie where he pulled out handfuls of dusty files. They showed that anyone who talks about a “one-in-a-hundred-year” flood in Brisbane is wrong. "

It pays to check out Tim Flannery's predictions about climate change
"TIM Flannery has just been hired by the Gillard Government to scare us stupid, and I can't think of a better man for the job.
This Alarmist of the Year is worth every bit of the $180,000 salary he'll get as part-time chairman of the Government's new Climate Commission. His job is simple: to advise us that we really, truly have to accept, say, the new tax on carbon dioxide emissions that this Government threatens to impose. This kind of work is just up the dark alley of Flannery, author of The Weather Makers, that bible of booga booga. He's had years of practice trying to terrify us into thinking our exhausts are turning the world into a fireball that will wipe out civilisation, melt polar ice caps and drown entire cities under hot seas.Small problem, though: after so many years of hearing Flannery's predictions, we're now able to see if some of the scariest have actually panned out.........
Mexico’s biggest freeze since 1957 means US produce price will skyrocket
"One industry veteran told Jesse Driskill, operations manager of the Nogales office of Meyer LLC, that Mexico had not had a freeze like this in 60 years.
What made this one even worse, Driskill said, is that forecasts were 5 to 10 degrees higher than what temperatures wound up being. Many growers took precautions, he said, but they did not harvest early because they did not expect it to get so cold."

Holland slashes carbon targets, shuns wind for nuclear
"Holland thus becomes the first country to abandon the EU-wide target of producing 20 per cent of its domestic power from renewables. This is a remarkable turnaround from a state that took the Kyoto Agreement seriously and chivvied other EU members into adopting renewable energy strategies. The FT reports that instead of the €4bn annual subsidy, it will be slashed to €1.5bn.
Holland's only nuclear reactor, the Borssele plant, opened in 1973, and was earmarked for closure by 2003. In 2006 the plant was allowed to operate until 2034, and the following year the government abandoned its opposition to new nuclear plants."
Australian Fisheries to Flourish?
"Let’s look at the facts here. The large team of scientists runs all sorts of models, they consider the effects of changes in future climate, and they produce maps showing increases in productivity almost everywhere they looked and for everything alive in and out of the sea. Furthermore, they publish the results in one of the leading journals dealing with climate change and ecosystems. Did they receive any press coverage at all? Of course not, but had their work predicted problems ahead for Australia’s marine environment, they would have been featured in media outlets the world over and undoubtedly been featured in at least a million websites. But given the positive message of their work, they get featured in World Climate Report instead!"
No 'tipping point' for Arctic sea ice - latest science
"Not so much, according to the latest research by German climate scientists. It seems that even in the case of a completely ice-free summer with the sun shining down onto an unprotected Arctic Ocean 24 hours a day (as it does in summer time up there), the heat absorbed by the sea would not be enough to permanently remove the ice cap. It would recover, in fact, within two years: there is no tipping point."
Meanwhile down at the south pole the sea ice around Antarctica is actually increasing. The ice there has been covering another 100,000 square km more sea each decade for the last 30 years, despite the well-publicised losses of ice shelf in the Western Antarctic
So how many nuclear power stations will Gillard build by 2020?

We still don’t know when wind power will break even, admits energy minister
"Ministers still do not know when wind power will pay for itself, the Government admitted tonight.Energy Minister Charles Hendry told MPs governments had spent £2.2 billion supporting wind power over eight years - and it was impossible to predict when the energy source would prove profitable without grants. He said: 'We expect that over time we will be able to reduce support for wind power and other renewable energy technologies as they become more economic, but it is not possible to put a specific timescale on this.'
Is this the UK's most useless wind turbine? It cost £130,000 in subsidies last year... to raise electricity worth just £100,000
"Passed by millions of drivers a year, it is one of England’s best known wind turbines. It is also one of its most useless.According to latest figures, the 280ft generator towering over the M4 near Reading worked at just 15 per cent of its capacity last year. And although it generated electricity worth an estimated £100,000, it had to be subsidised with £130,000 of public money.Since it was switched on in 2005, it has been given £600,000 in public subsidies while working at an average of 17 per cent of its capacity."

What did our grandchildren do to deserve the Prince of Wales?
"Today in Westminster, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Chris Huhne has been hosting an inquiry into perhaps the most exciting energy revolution in our lifetime. Shale gas will not only provide the world with cheap energy for many years to come but also free us from the shackles of our reliance on energy from such unstable places as Russia and the Middle East.
You might have thought this would be good news all round. And so it is. Shale gas is little short of miraculous: cheap, abundant, and available right on our doorstep. It is, as this article puts it, a global game changer. (H/T Global Warming Policy Foundation).....
So whose advice is our Government is seeking on our energy future?
Well here, as Bishop Hill has noted, is a meeting which took place this morning in the House of Commons:

10.00 am Room 19 (private) 10.15 am (public)
Subject: Electricity Market Reform.
Witnesses: Riverstone, Citigroup Global Markets, Virgin Green Fund, and Climate Change Capital; RSPB, Greenpeace, WWF, and Friends of the Earth (at 11.15 am).
Hello. Excuse me. What on earth do environmental activist lobby groups have to do with Britain’s energy policy?"

The death of satire
"That we are descending into the abyss is evidenced by this particular story, although there are many more. This one tells us, the author no doubt keeping an absolutely straight face, that "the only way for the UK renewable energy market to grow to a respectable size comparable with Germany is for it to have the full support of the incumbent government". ......The point, of course is that, as we wrote the day before yesterday, just as German is pulling out of solar subsidies as fast as she can, we have this commentator, with an IQ that is probably lower than the figure on my fridge thermometer, holding Germany up as the shining beacon which we should be striving to emulate."

RealClimategate hits the final nail in the coffin of 'peer review'
"But in today’s abstruse, fragmented world where the various branches of science have grown increasingly recondite and specialised, peer-review has become widely accepted as the least worst method by which quality science can be sifted from junk science.
And nowhere more so than within the climate science community. In the run-up to Climategate, one of the main weapons used by those within “the consensus” against dissenting scientists was that their various papers picking holes in AGW theory had not been “peer-reviewed” and were therefore invalid. As Phil Jones himself puts it in one of his emails:
“The peer review system is the safeguard science has adopted to stop bad science being published.”

Einstein was right - honey bee collapse threatens global food security
"Leaked documents from the Environmental Protection Agency confirm that clothianidin used on corn seed is "highly toxic", may pose a "long-term risk" to bees, and that previous tests were flawed.
Critics alleged a cover-up: Rabobank said we should be careful not to vilify agro-industry. The world needs food and fertilizer companies to keep finding ways to raise crop yields, if we are to feed over 70m extra mouths each year, and meet the demands of Asia's diet revolution, offset water scarcity in China and India, and divert a great chunk of the US, Argentine, and EU grain harvest into bio-fuels for cars. Snowzilla post mortem – the 2011 Groundhog day blizzard in perspective
"The nation is rather abuzz over the huge snowstorm (which I dubbed Snowzilla) this week, and I thought I’d put together a collection of loosley related news items. .....Refreshing sanity — It’s La Niña, obviously: Dr. Louis Uccellini, head of NCEP, winter storm textbook expert: “We are linking the storm tracks to the La Nina pattern which dominates the flow coming off the Pacific,” Uccellini explained to AP in a telephone interview. “This follows the pattern we would expect through the Ohio Valley and with heavy precipitation to the Great Lakes…You can’t relate climate change to individual storm systems. Clearly, there have been similar storms in previous decades. As intense as this storm is, it’s equivalent to other major storms that they’ve seen in past decades”
Whatever it is, it’s global warming
"Warmists blame global warming for fires and drought at one end of the country:
A shocking fire, but not a surprise to two Perth experts who fear this is a sign of worse to come.... Associate Professor Grant Wardell Johnson from Curtin University studies climate change and its effect on the environment. ”All the climate change models to south western australia show we’re getting drier and warmer and we are getting more extreme events.”
Warmists blame global warming for floods and rain at the other end of the country:
Senator Brown says the coal-mining industry should foot the bill for the Queensland reconstruction efforts, claiming their operations are partly responsible for the floods. “It’s the single biggest cause, burning coal, for climate change and it must take its major share of responsibility for the weather events we are seeing unfolding now,” he said. Doubts hit Ontario’s green energy plan
"TORONTO — Ontario’s plan to incite a homegrown green energy industry has stalled, industry experts say, as the plan is plagued by political doubt ahead of this fall’s provincial election.
Several factors are stirring marketplace jitters, including unhappy noises from the opposition Conservative party, international opposition to buy-local provisions in the plan and increasing hostility to wind turbines in rural Ontario.
“There is uncertainty out there,” says Dan Gormley, a Toronto-based lawyer who leads the green energy practice at Goodmans LLP. “And I think a good part of the uncertainty comes from people wondering how much longer the government can spend the sort of money that’s involved in handing out these contracts.”

Climategate 2.0
"I’ve come to think of this document as Climategate 2.0. I see it as the other shoe dropping. In recent weeks I’ve explored a number of issues raised by this PDF. Several more blog posts are in the works. Preparing them is time-consuming. In each instance hundreds of pages must be searched/scanned yet again so that the relevant bits can be collected in one place.
But I believe the end result will be dramatic. The picture that is emerging is not a pretty one. I’ve already used this document to demonstrate that IPCC insiders are fully aware that Chairman Rajendra Pachauri’s claim that IPCC reports rest solely on peer-reviewed literature is false. By showcasing the remarks of these insiders I’ve revealed that, rather than being comprised of the world’s top experts, the IPCC appoints authors based on their gender and their nationality. "
Tim Blair: Swept up by climate change tedium
"So Australia produces just 1.4 per cent of 3 per cent of the rest. Or, to express that amount in precise scientific terminology, less than half of sweet FA. Which, coincidentally, is what Australian governments really think about climate legislation. Global warming was a great election-winning device, but look how quickly Federal and State governments are ditching expensive carbon policies lately. They can't chuck 'em fast enough.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has made a point of discarding Kevin Rudd's rubbish ideas. She's hanging on to a carbon tax, but it should tremble every time she looks at it.
As for Garnaut's eight-part review of his review, throw it on the pile and burn it. "
Exactly why Bob Brown is wrong - and a disgraceful opportunist
"On 16 January, Senator Bob Brown, the leader of the Green Party, was quoted as saying that the Queensland coal mining industry should foot the bill for the Queensland floods because it helped cause them. His argument was that higher temperatures are causing higher evaporation. The result was “that’s causing the moisture in the air which is leading to these catastrophic floods"…
Conclusion…
Bob Brown has suggested that there is higher rainfall and more floods in Queensland now because of a high level of coal mining. The historical record shows that this is not the case. Average rainfall has not increased over the past 100 years. The highest flood levels recorded were in the 19th century.. "

The BBC is so biased why do I even bother?
"So why do I do it? Simple. Because the left-wing broadcast media – and I include the similarly left-wing, similarly publicly funded Channel 4 – is pretty much the only broadcast media we have in this country. Sure we have Sky, but Sky is way, way to the left of its US equivalent Fox News. Then we have ITV, which doesn’t really do politics. And Channel 5 which isn’t very watched.
So, basically, if you want to be on TV and get a political view across, your choices are to appear either on a channel which is grotesquely, hideously, institutionally left (BBC, Channel 4) or really quite surprisingly left given that it’s owned by the same people who own Fox (Sky). In other words, Hobson’s Choice."
the "record drought" in part of the Amazon
"In the increasingly bizarre Daily Failygraph there is a story which its shares with its stable mates, the unloved Independent and the BBC's house journal, The Guardian. This is about the "record drought" in part of the Amazon, a hilarious contribution to the Komik Korner put out by "tropical forest expert Simon Lewis", at the University of Leeds, which he and his mates have been touting since November last. This means that his WWF paymasters can't be far behind......But what brings this into the arena of the surreal, though, is that the chaps are featuring Manaus and the River Negro for their horror story. They forget to tell us, of course, that in 2009, the very same area suffered from floods which were being described as the worst for 56 years. The Negro river rose to 88.32 feet, just short of the 1953 record (pictured). But – and you guessed it - this was "caused by climate change".
Has the BBC broken faith with the General Public?
"The issue I have with this program and the BBC is not who is right or wrong in climate science, but the failure of the BBC to fairly present in the program the sceptical arguments in detail (which it must be fully aware of) with respect to climate science, the climategate emails and the inquiries to the general public."
The shape of things to come
"While the implications for British energy supply are obvious, as long as our fool leaders continue to push for increased wind power, in this case Texas has had the double embarrassment of having to go cap-in-hand to Mexico's state electricity company for extra power. "
We Spent Billions on Wind Power… and All I Got Was a Rolling Blackout
"For a time, Texas was bragging about being the #1 state for “wind power” (it still is) and we were bombarded with TV commercials and newspaper editorial touting the “Pickens Plan” for massive spending on wind energy. Pickens himself was building a huge wind farm in northwest Texas. He has now ceased construction. Now, because of relying so much on wind power, the state is suffering blackouts. My book’s publisher, Greenleaf Book Group in Austin, was without power all day and Austin wasn’t even affected by the recent winter storm. Mexico is trying to help by shipping power to Texas, but it is not enough.
Of course, Great Britain has experienced wind power failures (and rolling blackouts) during cold weather due to light winds. So has Minnesota, just last winter. I think we should learn from them."

"They are everywhere on the ABC, twittering that this cyclone is scary proof of the deadly perils of man-made warming. ..........We’ve in fact seen nothing in Queensland at all that we haven’t seen before, and worse.

Storm Stops Travelers as It Moves Across U.S.
"A paralyzing 2,000-mile swath of winter at its snowy, icy, messy worst pushed eastward across the United States on Tuesday, disrupting the rhythms of everyday life and punctuating this season’s recurring lesson that humankind has no dominion over nature. .....“It’s having a gigantic geographical impact,” said Bob Oravec, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service who tracked the storm from the safety of his office in relatively unscathed Camp Springs, Md.
Mr. Oravec offered a basic lesson in meteorology to explain weather that transcends the word “inclement.” A cold air mass from Canada has become entrenched across the north-central United States, while storms in the Mississippi Valley have been drawing moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Cold air plus moisture equals snow, and ice, and a new year that we are still ringing in with shovel scrapes against pavement. "
