Climategate
"Carbon (Dioxide) trading is now the fastest growing commodities market on earth.....And here’s the great thing about it. Unlike traditional commodities markets, which will eventually involve delivery to someone in physical form, the carbon (dioxide) market is based on lack of delivery of an invisible substance to no-one. Since the market revolves around creating carbon (dioxide) credits, or finding carbon (dioxide) reduction projects whose benefits can then be sold to those with a surplus of emissions, it is entirely intangible." This blog has been tracking the 'Global Warming Scam' for over ten years now. There are a very large number of articles being published in blogs and more in the MSM who are waking up to the fact the public refuse to be conned any more and are objecting to the 'green madness' of governments and the artificially high price of energy. This blog will now be concentrating on the major stories as we move to the pragmatic view of 'not if, but when' and how the situation is managed back to reality. To quote Professor Lindzen, "a lot of people are going to look pretty silly"

FURY AT £1BILLION CLIMATE CHANGE AID DEAL
"FRESH outrage erupted yesterday over the cost of details of the aid package overseas aid after it emerged that Britain is to stump up £1billion to help African countries fight climate change. Energy Secretary Chris Huhne will spearhead the megadeal that will see taxpayers shelling out for projects to help farmers insure their crops against flooding and drought. Other schemes include installing solar power in villages and building slurry pits that can produce gas to power generators. The move will infuriate millions of hard-pressed taxpayers trying to make ends meet. South Africa, the most economically advanced in the continent, is one of the continent, it is one of the countries to receive the handout."

Pointman — A dead mans hand detonator on hidden emails may protect ClimateGate whistleblower
"Pointman analyzes the ClimateGate whistleblower’s tactics and explains why he, she or they probably released those other 200,000 emails but kept them hidden behind the 4000-8000 character almost unbreakable password. He points out there are no emails released yet between key scientists and people in power, hence the worst, most damaging emails may be kept under a ” dead man’s hand detonator”. If politicians are afraid of what might be in those released-but-hidden emails, they may not want to expose or attack the whistleblower for fear of unleashing the other emails. The hidden emails buy the whistleblower protection."

Climategate 2: How to create a global warming scare from nothing
"Green group WWF tries to order up a hurricane scare from the University of East Anglia’s Mike Hulme, who suggests a few people who might oblige with what he admits is only a “theoretical” alarm, which can only be floated citing the catch-all “precautionary principle”. .....Warmist scientist Jonathan Overpeck, a coordinating lead author of the IPCC, wanted to ”deal a mortal blow” to the Medieval Warm Period - that embarrassing time the sceptics kept noting was warmer than today, and before cars and electrical power generation were invented. The importance of context
"Far from cherry-picking, McKitrick was explicitly testing the hypothesis that Suzuki had advanced, namely that the local weather had warmed in the autumn. Suddenly Schneider's nastiness seems a whole lot nastier. He gave a wholly wrong impression of McKitrick's point to his correspondents. In Makhachkala, which is in the North-Caucasus district, the minus 13.6 degrees Celsius temperature is the coldest registered since 1889, it said. In the Black-Earth Tambov region in central Russia, the temperature hit a 1998 record and was minus 19.2 degrees Celsius, the statement said." (H/T JoNova)
An Open Letter to Dr. Phil Jones of the UEA CRU
"Instead, you lied to cover it up. And when it was shown to be untrue, you lied again. And again. Here’s my point—the only reason I know that you lied, the only way you were caught in your lies, was the release of your emails."
BBC sought advice from global warming scientists on economy, drama, music... and even game shows
"Britain’s leading green activist research centre spent £15,000 on seminars for top BBC executives in an apparent bid to block climate change sceptics from the airwaves, a vast new cache of leaked ‘Climategate’ emails has revealed. The emails – part of a trove of more than 5,200 messages that appear to have been stolen from computers at the University of East Anglia – shed light for the first time on an incestuous web of interlocking relationships between BBC journalists and the university’s scientists, which goes back more than a decade. They show that University staff vetted BBC scripts, used their contacts at the Corporation to stop sceptics being interviewed and were consulted about how the broadcaster should alter its programme output. .....The ‘Climategate 2’ emails disclose that in private some of those same scientists have had doubts about aspects of the global warming case. For example, Professor Phil Jones, the head of the CRU, admitted there was no evidence that the snows of Kilimanjaro were melting because of climate change, and he and his colleagues agreed there were serious problems with the famous ‘hockey stick’ graph – the depiction of global temperatures that suggests they were broadly level for 1,000 years until they started to rise with industrialisation.
But although there is now more scientific debate than ever about influences on climate other than CO2, prompted by the fact that the world has not warmed for 15 years, a report from the BBC Trust this year compared climate change sceptics to the conspiracy theorists who blame America for 9/11, and said Britain’s main sceptic think-tank, the Global Warming Policy Foundation, should be given no air time."

Is the global warming scare the greatest delusion in history?
"All this madness ultimately rests on a blind faith in the threat of man-made global warming, which no one has done more to promote than the scientists whose private emails were again last week leaked onto the internet.
It is still not generally appreciated that the significance of these Climategate emails is that their authors, such as Michael Mann, are no ordinary scientists: they are a little group of fanatical insiders who have, for years, done more than anyone else to drive the warming scare, through their influence at the heart of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. And what is most striking about the picture that emerges from these emails is just how questionable the work of these men appears.
We see how they torture the evidence to support their theory – even to the point where some of them seem to lose faith in the story they are trying to tell. And we also see how rattled they were as soon as their work was challenged by expert outsiders such as Steve McIntyre, the mathematician who exposed the methods used to create Mann’s “hockey stick” temperature graph, which the IPCC had made Exhibit A for their theory.
Again and again we see them trying to defend the indefensible, giving vent to wild personal abuse of the enemies of what they call their “cause”, and stopping at nothing to keep their critics’ evidence out of IPCC reports and scientific journals, and prevent dissenting views from getting media attention."
Climategate 2: feeding the public “crap”

Revealed: How Climategate scientists DID collude with government officials to hide research that didn't fit their apocalyptic global warming claims
#5,000 leaked emails reveal scientists deleted evidence that cast doubt on claim that climate change was man-made
#Experts were under orders from US and UK officials to come up with a 'strong message'
#Critics claim: 'The stink of intellectual corruption is overpowering'
#Scientist asks, 'What if they find that climate change is a natural fluctuation? They'll kill us all'
"5,000 leaked emails reveal scientists deleted evidence that cast doubt on claims climate change was man-made. Experts were under orders from US and UK officials to come up with a 'strong message' Critics claim: 'The stink of intellectual corruption is overpowering' Scientist asks, 'What if they find that climate change is a natural fluctuation? They'll kill us all' And not only do the emails paint a picture of scientists manipulating data, government employees at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) are also implicated. One message appeared to show a member of Defra staff telling colleagues working on climate science to give the government a ‘strong message’. The emails paint a clear picture of scientists selectively using data, and colluding with politicians to misuse scientific information. ‘Humphrey’, said to work at Defra, writes: ‘I cannot overstate the HUGE amount of political interest in the project as a message that the government can give on climate change to help them tell their story. 'They want their story to be a very strong one and don’t want to be made to look foolish.’

"So when Tom Nelson asked today “Who’s got time to investigate BlackSmokeGate?” I decided to take on the task. Here’s the photo in question: ......Basically all that was done was to highlight a part of the steam with the point to point select tool, feather it and adjust the contrast to make it look darker. .....Here’s another example of Photoshop at work. Everyone knows they produce water vapor, and even the sun angle doesn’t look right in this one from the Guardian."
Is the cold December blast coming ?
"On 19th Oct Piers Corbyn, astrophysicist of WeatherAction.com announced at the Congress of Brilliant Minds in Madrid his forecast that Britain and West Europe will be generally exceptionally cold from around Nov 27 to Dec 28 (80% confidence). The build-up to such a blast has however been slow."
Tiptoe through the turbines...
"According to a report in The Economist, the Isle of Wight has been designated as Britain’s first ‘eco’ island. ......Already, every household in Britain is set to pay £280 a year over the odds for gas and electricity to fund the Government’s ‘green’ agenda, which amounts to little more than bunging foreign firms billions of pounds to clutter up our beautiful, world-heritage site countryside and our outstanding natural coastline with utterly useless War of the Worlds windmills.
I wonder if anyone has bothered to ask the inhabitants of the Isle of Wight if they want to be forced to drive rented electric cars, knit their own toilet paper and have their scenery desecrated by hopelessly inefficient solar panels and wind turbines sprouting like triffids. And having to pay through the nose for the privilege. What have they done to deserve being singled out for a expensive eco-experiment?"

Green 'tax' to rise every year... but don't worry, ministers claim overall bills will be lower - because their policies will make you use less energy
"But Dr Benny Peiser, of the Global Warming Foundation, said Mr Huhne’s reassurances were ‘political spin’. ‘All analysis by City banks and others make clear that current government policy will lead to big increases in energy bills,’ he said. ‘The energy-use reductions being assumed by the Government to justify the claim that bills will fall are not based on any sound economic facts. They are pure guesswork.’Government policy is based on an assumption that gas prices will continue to rise, but Dr Peiser said the price could fall. He said: ‘Prices are likely to come down very significantly, perhaps by 30 to 40 per cent if the UK Government gives the green light to shale gas exploration. The UK is sitting on a gold mine of shale gas.’

Phil Jones On The Magic Of Coal
"According to Dr. Phil, the warming from 1915 to 1945 was due to the Sun and volcanoes. The subsequent cooling until 1975 was caused by burning coal – which produces aerosols. The subsequent warming until 1998 was caused by burning coal which produces CO2, and the subsequent cooling is again caused by burning Chinese coal which produces aerosols."

Climategate, Part Duh!
"At what point will it finally occur to the pea-brained legion of journalists, academics, alleged scientists, United Nations propagandists, and others still blathering about “global warming” and “climate change” that there is no global warming and that the climate has been changing for the past 4.5 billion years on planet Earth?
It would appear that no amount of the evidence of fraud is sufficient to convince them they have either participated or been taken in by the greatest hoax of the modern era."
Climate cuttings 59
"Last time round I tried to highlight some of what had been found. Here is the Climategate II version of the same thing........."
Climategate II
"As the person (or persons) who released these latest e-mails noted, nearly 16,000 children die every day from avoidable hunger and similar, related causes, yet incompetent and corrupt governments, instead of spending resources on schemes which would assuredly alleviate or prevent suffering, conspire to enrich scammers, con-artists and grasping, simoniacal or usurious cronies. "
Inhofe comments on Climategate 2.0
"Washington, D.C. - Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, commented on the release today of additional emails by scientists contributing to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). ....."Even before the Climategate emails were released in 2009, the so-called ‘consensus' peddled by the IPCC was already shattered," Senator Inhofe said. "Nevertheless, the Obama administration is moving full speed ahead to implement global warming regulations that will impose the largest tax increase in American history, significantly raise energy prices, and destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs." (H/T Climate Depot)
Climategate 2.0: Phil Jones and Tom Wigley – calling a scientist “the jerk” over his UHI discoveries in California
"Phil Jones must be the most spiteful and unscientific person ever in the climate debate to say things like this about Jim Goodridge. He really does need to step down and retire, for good this time."
Climategate II?
"Can't see what the fuss is about, meself ... just another 5,000 e-mails showing the climate science "community" committing collective suicide - nothing a few "independent" scientific inquiries and a BBC documentary can't fix ... hide the recline, so to speak. Rather timely for Durban, though, one might think."
New leak of hacked global warming scientist emails: A 'smoking gun' proving a conspiracy - or just hot air?
#'We're choosing periods to show warming'
#'Science is being manipulated - it might not be too clever in the long run'
#'Climate change is a "better label" than global warming'
#'Many thanks for your paper - and congratulations for reviving global warming'
"The new email leak is accompanied by a text file which appears to protest against the huge expense of anti-warming technologies - highlighting deaths from poverty against the $36 billion expense of 'green' energy"
Breaking! Apparently, more emails released. Climategate II?
"Some alleged emails — choice picks:

Sorting Through the Stolen UAE Emails
"On a second reading of the stolen UAE emails leaked today, and just reading the README file emails, these sound worse than I thought at first – their impact will be devastating. "
ClimateGate II
"Days before the Durban Conference another stash of emails (open at own risk but reported to be virus free) have been released to the public. Details are sketchy but early reports indicate the emails are genuine.
The emails appear to be genuine, but the University of East Anglia said the “sheer volume of material” meant it was not yet able to confirm that they were. One of the emailers, the climate scientist Prof Michael Mann, has confirmed that he believes they are his messages. "
Climategate II
"Another batch of emails from the University of East Anglia–the same source as the original Climategate documents–has been leaked by FOIA.org. I haven’t had time to look at them yet, but various others have been sorting through them, and some preliminary findings are posted here, here and elsewhere.
Early returns suggest that these materials may be dynamite. For example:
Thorne:
I also think the science is being manipulated to put a political spin on it which for all our sakes might not be too clever in the long run."
Uh oh, global warming loons: here comes Climategate II!
"Breaking news: two years after the Climategate, a further batch of emails has been leaked onto the internet by a person – or persons – unknown. And as before, they show the "scientists" at the heart of the Man-Made Global Warming industry in a most unflattering light. Michael Mann, Phil Jones, Ben Santer, Tom Wigley, Kevin Trenberth, Keith Briffa – all your favourite Climategate characters are here, once again caught red-handed in a series of emails exaggerating the extent of Anthropogenic Global Warming, while privately admitting to one another that the evidence is nowhere near as a strong as they'd like it to be.
In other words, what these emails confirm is that the great man-made global warming scare is not about science but about political activism."
The release of thousands of more emails is quite simply another victory for science'
"Morano: 'The new emails further expose the upper echelon of the UN IPCC as being more interested in crafting a careful narrative than following the evidence. "

GMU on climate scientists: we are the 97%
"The upshot? The punditry looked for and recently found an alternate number to tout — “97% of the world’s climate scientists” accept the consensus, articles in the Washington Post and elsewhere have begun to claim.
This number will prove a new embarrassment to the pundits and press who use it. The number stems from a 2009 online survey of 10,257 earth scientists, conducted by two researchers at the University of Illinois. The survey results must have deeply disappointed the researchers – in the end, they chose to highlight the views of a subgroup of just 77 scientists, 75 of whom thought humans contributed to climate change. The ratio 75/77 produces the 97% figure that pundits now tout."
Philip dismisses wind farms as 'a useless disgrace' and says people who back them believe in a 'fairy tale'
"It was disclosed last year that electricity customers are paying an average of £90 a year to subsidise wind farms along with other forms of renewable energy and energy efficiency schemes as part of a Government scheme to meet carbon (dioxide)-reduction targets.
Mr Wilmar said one of the main reasons the Duke thought onshore wind farms to be ‘a very bad idea’ was their reliance on such subsidies. The financial incentives being offered to green energy developers have led landowners – including the Duke of Gloucester, the Queen’s cousin – to look to build wind farms on their estates.Prince Philip said he would never consider allowing his land to be used for turbines and complained about their impact on the countryside. Mr Wilmar said: ‘He said he thought that they’re not nice at all for the landscape.’
The Duke’s comments echo the views of his son Prince Charles, who has refused to have any built on his Duchy of Cornwall land. However, while they are opposed to onshore wind farms, the Royal Family stands to earn millions of pounds from those placed offshore."
Hurrah for Philip! Wind power is the most ruinous folly of our age
"This supposedly green development is actually environmentally unfriendly. For the turbines are not just an eyesore, but on many wind-farms they have had to be turned off after locals complained that the noise they made left them unable to sleep and even needing to wear ear-defenders in their gardens. For these and other miseries, the population is having to pay through the nose. Public subsidies make wind power three times more expensive than normal-tariff electricity. And since such subsidies drain investment away from new conventional power plants, the risk of power cuts grows greater."
Ex-Chancellor backs Philip over attack on wind farms which Duke described as 'absolutely useless'
"Former Chancellor Lord Lawson yesterday led the backing for Prince Philip after he branded wind farms ‘absolutely useless’. In a scathing attack, the Duke of Edinburgh said the turbines were ‘completely reliant on subsidies’ and ‘would never work’. His comments are a rebuke to the Government, which is trying to increase the amount of energy generated by wind farms and other renewable technologies. Last night Lord Lawson said the Duke was ‘spot on’ and speaking on behalf of ordinary people in fuel poverty."

Climate change actually boosts human evolution as it forces us to move to new areas and work together
"The first began around two million years ago when a prolonged dry period caused forests to disappear leading to the emergence of Homo erectus - an early human adapted to running and hunting on the grassy plains. During the ice age,Neanderthals thrived in Europe, Denisovians in Asia and modern humans in Africa
During the ice age, Neanderthals (above) thrived in Europe, Denisovians in Asia and modern humans in Africa. The next major development came during the ice age which began 450,000 years ago during which scientists believe human beings were split into three separate groups. European humans evolved into Neanderthals while Asian humans evolved into Denisovans. Those remaining on the African subcontinent evolved into modern human beings but this group had to wait until around 60,000 years ago when a prolonged warm spell allowed them to spread north. Then a sustained cold period between 25,000 and 15,000 years ago caused further changes as the freezing temperatures caused a 330ft drop in sea levels allowing humans to cross the Bering land bridge into North America."
BBC's Mr Climate Change accepted £15,000 in grants from university rocked by global warning scandal
"A senior BBC journalist accepted £15,000 in grants from the university at the heart of the ‘Climategate’ scandal – and later went on to cover the story without declaring an interest to viewers. Roger Harrabin, the BBC’s ‘environment analyst’, used the money from the University of East Anglia’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research to fund an ‘ad hoc’ partnership he ran with a friend."

Exactly how would the Greens power the world?
"The Greens and other global warming alarmists want to “decarbonise” the world. Spot how many of the world’s main electricity-generating power sources they would scrap or ban. Coal, gas and oil, as well as river-killing hydro and planet-threatening nuclear.
What on earth is left that could do the job and light the homes of the poor?"
The BBC's hidden 'warmist' agenda is rapidly unravelling
"Since 2006, the BBC has relentlessly promoted the global warming orthodoxy as a pressure group in its own right. In covering the latest twists of this story on his blog, Montford cites another odd BBC programme, Earth Reporters: Sea Change, funded by Unesco, which was like an adulatory commercial for the scientists who push alarm about the impact of global warming on the oceans, via the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The scientific adviser for the programme was the same Dr Smith who organised that 2006 seminar, and whose website lists a string of other BBC programmes he has worked on.
The irony is, however, that just as the BBC adopted its new hard line on climate change, in the real world the story was beginning to shift. Ever more searching questions have come to be asked about the supposed “consensus” on man-made warming, and the BBC’s coverage has come to look ever more one-sidedly absurd. "

U.N. Panel Finds Climate Change Behind Some Extreme Weather Events
"The findings were released in Kampala, Uganda, by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a high-profile United Nations body assigned to review and report periodically on developments in climate research. The group won the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore in 2007 but later became a target of controversy related to minor factual errors in a large report that it had issued that year. It has tightened its procedures in the hope of preventing future errors. "

Rajendra Pachauri – The Little Man Who Told Big Whoppers (Donna Laframboise)
"The behaviour of the IPCC’s chairman, therefore, tells us a great deal about whether the IPCC is credible and trustworthy. And let us be clear: if the IPCC can’t be trusted then its reports can’t be trusted. And if its reports can’t be trusted then the world is almost certainly wasting spectacular amounts of time and money worrying about greenhouse gas emissions."
Crossing the Ice - Day 18 is hell frozen over for Aussie adventurers James Castrission and Justin Jones
"Nightmare winds, heavy snowfall and days of total white-out have turned what was already a monumental challenge into an epic battle of will versus weather. ......Part of the problem is the fresh soft snow, which makes it almost impossible to drag 200kg sleds carrying vital supplies. Meteorologists monitoring Antarctic conditions say it is the highest snowfall in the region in years. (H/T Climate Depot)

Warmists say 10 years of non-warming proves nothing. Give them another seven years

I Blame The Australian Carbon Tax for Price Increases
"On cue comes the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, which this week issued warnings to businesses that they will face whopping fines of up to $1.1m if they blame the carbon tax for price rises."
La Nina is back, but weaker than last time
"The current La Nina follows closely behind the moderate to strong one that started in September 2010 and ended with neutral conditions established in May this year, the WMO said. "Historical precedents and the latest outputs from forecast models suggest that peak intensity of this La Nina will be reached in late 2011 or early 2012, and that it is very unlikely to reach conditions as strong as those of the 2010-11 La Nina event," the statement said."
Re-election Strategy Is Tied to a Shift on Smog
"The half-hour meeting in the Oval Office was not a negotiation; the president had decided against ratcheting up the ozone rule because of the cost and the uncertainty it would impose on industry and local governments. He clearly understood the scientific, legal and political implications. He told Ms. Jackson that she would have an opportunity to revisit the Clean Air Act standard in 2013 — if they were still in office. We are just not going to do this now, he said."
Nova demolishes Klien
"Joanne Nova has a really fine essay on Naomi Klein. This is great writing, easily as fluent as Klein herself, only rational. An excerpt:
By building her whole argument on un-scientific quicksand, Klein makes mindless statements that unwittingly apply more to her own arguments than anyone elses. She explores “how the right has systematically used crises—real and trumped up—to push through a brutal ideological agenda designed not to solve the problems that created the crises but rather to enrich elites.”
No one uses trumped-up-crises better than the left: Which team is demanding billions to “stop the storms”? And which elites will be enriched? The carbon traders and financiers. ...."
Why BEST Will Not Settle the Climate Debate
"It turned out that they were willing to publish my letter, but not my credentials as emeritus professor at the University of Virginia and former director of the U.S. Weather Satellite Service. Apparently, they were concerned that readers might gain the impression that I knew something about climate. .....Contrary to some commentary, BEST in no way confirms the scientifically discredited hockey stick graph, which was based on multi-proxy analysis and had been so eagerly adopted by climate alarmists. ....None of the warmistas can explain why the climate hasn't warmed in the 21st century, while CO2 has been increasing rapidly. It's no wonder that Herman Cain, a former math and computer science major in college, says that "man-made global warming is poppycock" (NYT, Nov. 12). He blames climate fears on "scientists who tried to concoct the science" and "were busted because they tried to manipulate the data."
Firm in BBC news-fixing row targeted poverty guru
"FBC Media claims in its promotional literature that it targeted Professor Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York, to be an “ambassador” for its corporate client on programmes it made about the controversial palm oil industry in Malaysia."

Why is Britain the Global Leader in Reality TV Shows? (Roger Pielke, Jr.)
A mouthpiece?
"Astonishing stuff from the Independent..., who have followed up on their piece about the BBC's links to environmentalists with a look at links between the Earth Institute at Columbia University - in particular its star economist Jeffrey Sachs - and a big palm oil company in Malaysia."
The BBC's Green Corruption Scandal Deepens
"The London-based television company being investigated by Ofcom over a global news fixing row tried to “cultivate” a world-famous environmental economist and other leading opinion formers in the green movement for the documentaries it made for the BBC and other news broadcasters."
ENERGY BILLS TO ROCKET BY 60%
"Experts blame the upward trend on the green agenda which will force suppliers to invest in new technologies that consumers will have to pay for. The experts warn that average electricity bills could rise £300 a year to £800 in the next 10 years and gas prices could increase from £845 annually to more than £1,300 – a leap of £455. The predicted price rise “could be catastrophic for many households”, said Thomas Lyon of price comparison website uSwitch.com. He said consumers had already been “knocked for six” by this year’s hikes."

Obama explodes Gillard’s emissions trading deceit
"One of the Gillard Government’s most popular deceits is that its carbon dioxide tax - to be followed by emissions trading - isn’t putting us way ahead of the rest of the world, and ahead of the biggest emittors: ........That deception was yesterday exposed by the US president himself, standing right next to Prime Minister Julia Gillard in front of a huge press pack: .....The answer in short is: there is no way in the world that the US is about to move to a national emission trading scheme or carbon dioixde tax, and certainly not while China and India refuse. The Gillard Government is dishonest. "
BBC Caught Selling News Slots to Climate Change Crusaders
"Perhaps most damning is the fact that a BBC World documentary about climate change was sponsored by green crusaders Envirotrade. And of course “Envirotrade was featured in a positive light in the programme but viewers were unaware that there was a funding arrangement in place.” The BBC have ruled “that commercial, financial or other interests may have influenced the editorial judgments in these programmes.”
So remember that next time you swallow the Beeb’s “the debate is over” climate change line… "
Durban climate conference DOA before it gets started
"For the mechanism of global warming, the IPCC report emphasizes the impact of human activities and the correlation between the CO2 concentration and temperature increase. However, the Earth is a complex dynamic system with various factors affecting each other; great uncertainties exist regarding causes and effects of the climate changes. Therefore, the claims of the IPCC AR4 have been largely questioned. The IPCC report is no longer the most authoritative document on climate changes, as it is restricted by its political tendencies and some errors and flaws. –Fang et al., SCIENCE CHINA, Earth Sciences • October 2011 Vol.54 No.10: 1458–1468"

BBC drops Frozen Planet's climate change episode to sell show better abroad
"Viewers in the United States, where climate change sceptics are particularly strong group, will not see the full episode. ....He added that the BBC’s attitude allowed other countries to opt out of the climate change episodes for “political reasons” or because they had already covered the issue with previous programmes. "
Climate change episode of Frozen Planet won't be shown abroad... to help sell the show
"Viewers of the BBC's landmark wildlife series Frozen Planet outside the UK will only see six episodes of the documentary after the broadcaster decided to drop the final one about climate change. Bosses decided to exclude the episode to help sell the show better abroad. Sir David Attenborough presents and authors the episode, entitled 'On Thin Ice', which looks at how the planet's ice is changing and what it means not only to the animals and people at the Poles, but also the rest of the planet. .....More than 30 international networks have bought the series, the Daily Telegraph said, but 10 rejected the final two episodes, including the one on climate change."

The BBC reveals how Blair’s 'multi-billion-pound gaffe’ may triple our electricity bills
"I would not have wished it on anyone to sit through last Monday’s laborious Panorama, entitled “Who’s Fuelling the Rise in Your Fuel Bills?”, but two things about it were remarkable. One was that it was the first BBC programme, as far as I know, to admit that electricity from wind turbines is “eye-wateringly more expensive” than that from conventional power stations. According to one estimate cited by Panorama, Chris Huhne’s wish for us to spend £200 billion on renewable energy in the next nine years could triple our electricity bills, pushing millions more households into “fuel poverty”.
The programme’s other startling feature was an interview with Sir David King, formerly Tony Blair’s chief scientific adviser. This confirmed that in March 2007, the prime minister had made “a multi-billion-pound gaffe” when he signed us up to the European Council’s historic commitment that, by 2020, the EU would derive 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources. What Blair did not realise, as he and the EU’s political leaders argued “until two or three in the morning” without their technical advisers, was that “energy” includes many things, such as gas for heating, which cannot be derived from renewables.
A Treasury official explained to Panorama that they had worked out that Britain could not hope to generate more than 15 per cent of its electricity from renewables. But Blair recklessly signed up to a target which meant that 32 per cent of our electricity would have to come from renewables, which would be fantastically expensive were it even feasible. By the time King and Blair’s other advisers learnt what he had let us in for, it was too late.
The programme ended with the ineffable Mr Huhne assuring us that “the overall effect of government policy will be to lower bills”. Even the BBC was clearly not convinced."
Heresy
"My latest Wall Street Journal Mind and Matter column:
The list of scientific heretics who were persecuted for their radical ideas but eventually proved right keeps getting longer. Last month, Daniel Shechtman won the Nobel Prize for the discovery of quasicrystals, having spent much of his career being told he was wrong.
"I was thrown out of my research group. They said I brought shame on them with what I was saying," he recalled, adding that the doyen of chemistry, the late Linus Pauling, had denounced the theory with the words: "There is no such thing as quasicrystals, only quasi-scientists."
The Australian medical scientist Barry Marshall, who hypothesized that a bacterial infection causes stomach ulcers, received similar treatment and was taken seriously only when he deliberately infected himself, then cured himself with antibiotics in 1984. Eventually, he too won the Nobel Prize.
Drs. Shechtman and Marshall are on a distinguished list. Galileo, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein all had to run the gauntlet of conventional wisdom in the scientific establishment. For a profession whose very product is new knowledge, science seems strangely resistant to novelty.
In the 1840s, Ignaz Semmelweiss's lonely battle to get the medical establishment to accept that doctors were spreading childbed fever from mother to mother cost him his job and his sanity (though his prickly personality didn't help). Alec Gordon, a doctor in Aberdeen, Scotland, had failed in the same quest five decades before."
Renewable Energy: Bubble, Scam or Both?
"Crony Capitalism, Green Energy Division: The lead story in today’s New York Times is a devastating look at solar and wind power subsidies. Too bad it appears on a Saturday when fewer people will read it (which may not be a coincidence). The print hed and sub-hed tell it better than the online version: “Rich Subsidies Powering Solar and Wind Projects: Big Rise in Government Aid—Companies Are Virtually Assured of Profits.” It’s worth reading the whole thing to soak in the outrageousness of the whole scene, but this graph gives a worthy summary:
The government support — which includes loan guarantees, cash grants and contracts that require electric customers to pay higher rates — largely eliminated the risk to the private investors and almost guaranteed them large profits for years to come. The beneficiaries include financial firms like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, conglomerates like General Electric, utilities like Exelon and NRG — even Google. "

Water from thin air: Aussie Ed's Airdrop an international hit
"An Australian designer has beaten 500 inventors to win a £10,000 international prize for his beetle-inspired device that is capable of extracting water from even the driest desert air. With global temperatures continuing to rise and droughts set to become more severe, a device capable of literally pulling water out of thin air is likely to have significant global applications."
ED: Useful when it stops raining....More than 500 homes in South Australia's Riverland will be without power for another night after severe storms downed powerlines on Wednesday afternoon. ....ETSA spokesman Paul Roberts says crews are working to remove power poles and wires from beneath large trees."There will be possibly between 500 and 1000 customers who we won't be able to restore power to tonight. We're continuing to work very hard to try and restore that power but the sheer weight of numbers of the jobs and tasks means it's just going to be impossible," he said."
The great offsets scam begins
"Most of the Gillard Government’s planned cuts to our emissions actually involves paying foreigners to cut their own. From 2020, we’ll be spending more than $3 billion a year on foreign carbon credits, rising to an astonishing $57 billion a year by 2050, according to Treasury modelling.
If you think this is an invitation to be ripped off, then you won’t be surprised by this:
An environmental group has accused China of climate blackmail after threats to vent powerful greenhouse gases if Europe cuts off carbon credits next year. The row over hydrofluorocarbon-23 offsets – which have a much greater warming effect than carbon dioxide and linger in the atmosphere for 200 years – has intensified before international climate negotiations in Durban this month.
Since 2005, Chinese firms have received the bulk of the $6bn in carbon credits for the reduction of these gases, which are produced in the manufacturing of refrigerant chemicals. The money has mostly come from European firms that have bought the offsets under the clean development mechanism, but this source of funding will come to an end next year. The EU has banned HFC-23 offsets because they are inefficient: the value of credits is 70 times the cost of destroying HFC-23 gases.
There are also widespread suspicions that Chinese and Korean firms have cynically created hydrofluorocarbon facilities in order to qualify for credits, which can generate twice as much income as selling the refrigerant. But Europe’s decision has angered Chinese officials responsible for administering the system, which has generated $1.3bn in tax revenues for the state.
The China Clean Development Mechanism Fund warned last week that the loss of income would force HFC producers to cut costs. “If there’s no trading of [HFC-23] credits, they’ll stop incinerating the gases” said Xie Fei, the fund’s revenue management director. "
What Hath Kyoto Wrought?
"It is obvious from this data that economic depression causes a reduction in CO2 emissions. What has not been so obvious to the Kyoto folks is that the converse is true—forcibly reducing CO2 emissions comes at a cost to the economy."

The IPCC’s Fake Review Editor
"But it turns out there’s a far more serious problem with Chapter 3. It lists includes a fake review editor – the people who are supposed to ensure that feedback solicited from external experts receives proper attention at the IPCC.
Over at his ClimateAudit blog, Steve McIntyre wrote about this more than a year ago but I missed it. A Freedom of Information request filed by retired UK engineer David Holland turned up an October 2006 e-mail from Kevin Trenberth, who was one of the coordinating lead authors of Chapter 3 (aka one of the two people in charge). It says, in part:
I am writing to protest the inclusion of Bubu Pateh Jallow as Review Editor…He played no role whatsoever in our chapter. He did not attend any meetings, he did not answer email and he should NOT be listed in my view."

The Durban Game
"So when the developed world asks India and China and Brazil and Indonesia to cut back on carbon emissions, we’re asking them to cut back on developing their country’s health and well-being and infrastructure and manufacturing … ...What will happen in Durban is that the developing countries will pull out all of the stops to convince the developed world to give them money. We’ll hear endless heart-wrenching stories of climate refugees and dying reefs and ecological zones being uprooted and moved polewards without so much as a by-your-leave. And not forgetting, people in polar bear suits. Can’t have a UN Climate Change Carnival without polar bears."

Credibility Of EU Energy Modelling In Doubt
"The credibility of a European energy review has been cast into doubt by experts who point out that long-term plans to cut carbon emissions are based on an economic model owned by a single Greek university that cannot be independently scrutinised."
Scrapping wind farms in favour of nuclear and gas will save each of us £550
"Shelving expensive wind farms in favour of cheaper nuclear and gas-fired power stations would save every Briton almost £550, it is claimed. Government plans to cut pollution by a third by 2020 rely heavily on wind power and will cost £108billion to implement, an accountancy firm has calculated. But shifting the emphasis away from turbines and towards nuclear and gas-fired power stations would slash the bill by £34billion, according to KPMG. This equates to around £550 for every person in the country."

The rain in Perth falls mainly over Tim
"Climate Commissioner Tim Flannery predicted global warming would destroy Perth:
As temperatures around the world warmed by 2 to 7 per cent, Sydney could glimpse its future by looking at the devastating impact that global warming had already had on Perth, which he said was likely to become a “ghost metropolis”....
“I think there is a fair chance Perth will be the 21st century’s first ghost metropolis,” Dr Flannery said. “It’s whole primary production is in dire straits and the eastern states are only 30 years behind.”
In fact:
The Perth metropolitan area which received 7mm overnight has had one of the wettest starts to November on record.
During spring this year, the city has recorded 182.8 mm of rain-well above the average springtime rainfall of 154.9mm.
The yearly tally is also high-so far this year 765.4mm has fallen on the city compared to this time last year when only 472.8 mm had been recorded.
Heat builds over emissions tax on farmers
"National has shrugged off Labour claims it is "having a bob each way" and misleading farmers over the controversial inclusion of agriculture in the emissions trading scheme. The so-called "fart tax" – which would charge farmers for the harmful gas emissions from fertilisers and livestock – is deeply unpopular with the agriculture sector. "
Chris Huhne was as wrong about the euro as he is now about the wind
"..It was telling to note that one of the authors of this quaint historical curiosity was Chris Huhne, whose current panacea for Britain’s ills is his dream that we should pay £200 billion, to largely foreign-owned companies, to cover our countryside and sea with thousands of inefficient and ludicrously expensive windmills – not to mention filling our roads with even more useless electric cars. Another of Huhne’s fellow euro-fans was Adair Turner, who now works alongside him as chairman of the Committee on Climate Change, sharing his infatuation with windmills and electric cars. "

Shale Gas Revolution
"....Mitchell fought through waves of skepticism and opposition to extract natural gas from shale. The method he and his team used to release the trapped gas, called fracking, has paid off in the most immense way. In 2000, shale gas represented just 1 percent of American natural gas supplies. Today, it is 30 percent and rising. .....The shale gas revolution challenges the coal industry, renders new nuclear plants uneconomic and changes the economics for the renewable energy companies, which are now much further from viability. .....A few weeks ago, I sat around with John Rowe, one of the most trusted people in the energy business, and listened to him talk enthusiastically about this windfall. He has no vested interest in this; indeed, his company might be hurt. But he knows how much shale gas could mean to America. It would be a crime if we squandered this blessing."

UN Climate Warnings Are So 1989
"Amid all that drama and turmoil, the United Nations was telling us that governments had only a 10-year window before global warming would be beyond human control.
That’s right, twenty-two years ago the UN was saying exactly what we’re being told today. Entire nations are at risk of being wiped off the face of the Earth as a result of global-warming-induced rising sea levels. Well, not quite exactly. You see, according to that 1989 prediction, those nations were supposed to have disappeared by the year 2000.
Of course, nothing of the kind actually happened. Which means we’re entitled to an explanation. What’s different this time? Why should we believe today’s warnings about the dire effects of global warming when the UN has already cried Wolf?"

Comments On The BEST FAQ
"The BEST project provides an interesting new group to examine the land surface temperature record as applied to long term temperature trends and anomalies. Der Spiegel Warned Of Warming In 1948, Then Cooling In 1974, And Again Warming In 1986!

Scientific heresy
"Well here’s why it matters. The alarmists have been handed power over our lives; the heretics have not. Remember Britain’s unilateral climate act is officially expected to cost the hard-pressed UK economy £18.3 billion a year for the next 39 years and achieve an unmeasurably small change in carbon dioxide levels.
At least* sceptics do not cover the hills of Scotland with useless, expensive, duke-subsidising wind turbines whose manufacture causes pollution in Inner Mongolia and which kill rare raptors such as this griffon vulture. At least crop circle believers cannot almost double your electricity bills and increase fuel poverty while driving jobs to Asia, to support their fetish. At least creationists have not persuaded the BBC that balanced reporting is no longer necessary. At least homeopaths have not made expensive condensing boilers, which shut down in cold weather, compulsory, as John Prescott did in 2005. At least astrologers have not driven millions of people into real hunger, perhaps killing 192,000 last year according to one conservative estimate, by diverting 5% of the world’s grain crop into motor fuel*.
That’s why it matters. We’ve been asked to take some very painful cures. So we need to be sure the patient has a brain tumour rather than a nosebleed."
A short anthology of changing climate
"Take several even longer steps backwards, through the medium of Central England temperature (CET) the oldest and most examined instrumental data set in the world- maintained by the UK’s Met office- and this puts GISS into further historic context, in that the temperature rise extends-with numerous advances and reverses- all the way to 1659."
Solar panels swindle: It was Labour's big idea to cut global warming. But all it did was make a lucky few very rich...
"The scheme was introduced by the last Labour government in order to encourage a huge switch to green energy in an attempt to hit its target of reducing Britain’s carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050. These green energy levies are costing the normal homeowner dear, adding nine per cent to our energy bills this year, according to the industry regulator Ofgem. Millions of ordinary consumers, to put it bluntly, are therefore having their pockets picked to pay for the latest government eco folly.
.....But as with wind turbines, the environmental negatives of solar energy are being overlooked in the mad rush to encourage anything which can be classified as ‘green’. Of course, it would be mad if we didn’t try to extract clean energy from the sun, the wind and the ground. But the Government’s subsidy schemes are not ultimately going to help us to achieve that aim. All they are doing is to create a rigged market which helps the rich foster a green and caring image for which the rest of us are paying dearly."
